The Advantage Most People Miss When Becoming a Career coach
A lot of people think becoming a career coach means starting from scratch. But that’s rarely true. Most successful coaches didn’t invent expertise. They translated their past experience. A recruiter becomes a coach who understands hiring decisions. A hiring manager becomes a coach who understands evaluation. A corporate leader becomes a coach who understands promotion dynamics. Your previous career is usually the foundation of your coaching advantage. Not something you leave behind. So here’s something worth thinking about: What part of your previous experience gives you the biggest edge as a career coach? The thing clients come to you for that others might not understand as deeply. Sometimes the strongest positioning is hiding in the experience you already have.

This resonates so much. I came from a DevOps Engineering background before becoming a career coach, and that technical experience has turned into my biggest differentiator. I understand the - promotion dynamics, - the stakeholder alignment, and - the unspoken expectations in engineering orgs in a way that goes beyond generic career advice. It’s not about starting over, it’s about leveraging the depth you already have. Great reminder.
The Moment You Realize You’re Actually a Career Coach
One of the strangest parts of becoming a career coach is that there’s no clear moment where someone gives you the title. At first, you don’t have a degree that magically flips the switch. No official promotion. At some point, you might just realize people are asking you for advice. You’re helping someone think through their career. You’re guiding them through decisions that matter. And suddenly the question appears: Is this something I could actually build a business around? Most career coaches didn’t start by saying ā€œI want to start a coaching company.ā€ They started by helping people. Then the pattern becomes obvious. So I’m curious about something: What was the first moment you realized this could actually be a business for you? Not when you decided to go all in. The moment the idea first crossed your mind.

Really resonates with what you said about there being no clear moment when someone "gives" you the title. It’s more like you look up one day and realize you’ve been doing the work for a while. My moment came when I helped someone navigate a tough career situation from start to finish and he ended up landing a job. It wasn’t just that he got the job; it was seeing how much clarity and confidence he gained along the way. I remember thinking, I didn’t just give advice here. I guided someone through a major life transition, and it actually worked. That’s when the thought first flickered: maybe this isn’t just something I do for friends. Maybe this is something I could build a real practice around. Curious to hear what that first spark looked like for others.
Missed the Workshop? Here’s the Replay and a Quick Recap
Thanks to everyone who joined the workshop yesterday. Seriously, it was really good seeing familiar names pop up and hearing what you’re all working toward this year. We’ll upload the recording to the Classroom so you can go back to it or watch it if you couldn’t make it. Also, here is the link where you can download the templates and access the slides. But here’s a simple, clean rundown of what we covered so it stays fresh. 1. Start with the Life Plan (Eulogy) Before setting any goals, get clear on how you want to be remembered. When that’s in place, the goals actually feel connected to something real. 2. Use the Vision Board for alignment, not pressure We talked about how the vision board only works after the Life Plan. It’s there to pull you forward emotionally, not to guilt-trip you with deadlines. 3. Turn the vision into quarterly goals Year-long goals sound inspiring, but they’re way too abstract. Quarterly goals give you enough urgency to move and enough time to actually get things done. 4. Stick to the three-goal rule Three goals per quarter. That’s it. Once you try to chase everything, progress slows down fast. 5. Make goals finishable and measurable By the end of the quarter, you should know with zero debate whether you completed it. No ā€œkind of.ā€ No ā€œalmost.ā€ 6. Build daily habits that support each goal The daily actions are the part you control. The goal is just the outcome of those actions stacking up. 7. Do a weekly review Same day, same time. It’s the check-in that keeps everything on track without needing motivation to carry you. This is the exact rhythm we use at Opny because it removes the guesswork and makes execution feel way simpler.

🚨WORKSHOP ALERT: How To Actually Hit Your Goals In 2026
TOMORROW (Tuesday, the 13th) AT 12 PM EST we’re running a workshop for our clients, and it felt right to open it up to the Skool community as well. It’s something we already did behind the scenes with our team, because it actually helps people stick to their goals. Every year, January feels full of motivation… and then real life hits. Too many goals. Too many priorities. No real system. And suddenly, the things you cared about start slipping. So in this session, we’ll walk through the simple structure we use internally to help people actually follow through: • Life plan (the ā€œeulogyā€ exercise) • Vision board • Quarterly goals (just 3) • Weekly review • Daily execution These are the things that make goals feel doable instead of overwhelming. If you’re joining, drop an ā€œI’m in.ā€ And if you already have a goal for 2026, share it. I’d love to hear what you’re aiming for.
