The Advantage Most People Miss When Becoming a Career coach
A lot of people think becoming a career coach means starting from scratch. But that’s rarely true. Most successful coaches didn’t invent expertise. They translated their past experience. A recruiter becomes a coach who understands hiring decisions. A hiring manager becomes a coach who understands evaluation. A corporate leader becomes a coach who understands promotion dynamics. Your previous career is usually the foundation of your coaching advantage. Not something you leave behind. So here’s something worth thinking about: What part of your previous experience gives you the biggest edge as a career coach? The thing clients come to you for that others might not understand as deeply. Sometimes the strongest positioning is hiding in the experience you already have.
Certification vs Results in Career Coaching
One of the most interesting things about the career coaching industry is how often this question comes up: Do you need a certification to succeed? Some people believe it’s essential. Others build very successful practices without one. The reason this conversation is tricky is because career coaching sits in an unusual space. Traditional coaching training focuses on conversation, self-discovery, and helping someone find their own answers. But a lot of career coaching is different. You’re helping someone land a job. Position themselves in the market. Prepare for interviews. Negotiate offers. There’s a strategic and tactical element to it. And in most cases, clients aren’t asking about credentials. They’re asking: Have you helped someone like me? Do you have a process? Can you help me get results? I shared my full thoughts on this in a video where I break down: • When certification actually helps • When it doesn’t matter as much as people think • And the question career coaches should be asking instead If you’re thinking about becoming a career coach, this is a conversation worth understanding. Do You Need a Certification to Become a Career Coach?
This question comes up a lot when people start exploring career coaching. “Do I need a certification before I can do this seriously?” There’s a lot of debate around it. Some people see certification as essential. Others see it as optional. And there are plenty of successful coaches on both sides. So I’m curious about this community. Are you certified as a coach? Spring is usually when people clean their houses.
But it’s also a good time to clean something else: your systems. When you’re building a coaching business, it’s easy to focus only on effort. Posting more. Networking more. Trying more ideas. But effort without systems usually turns into frustration. Because if you want to hit your goals this year, it’s not just about motivation. It’s about whether the structure behind your work actually supports those goals. So this season is a good moment to pause and audit. Ask yourself: 🌱 Do I have a clear system for getting leads? 🌱 Do I have a consistent system for posting and showing up on LinkedIn? 🌱 Do I have a way to track conversations and follow-ups? 🌱 Do I know exactly what metrics matter right now? 🌱 If I repeated my current process for the next 90 days, would it realistically get me to my goal? Most of the time the issue isn’t effort. It’s that the system underneath the effort is incomplete. And this community is here to help with that. So as we move into this “spring check-in,” take a moment to look at the structure of your business, not just the activity. Because the right systems make everything else easier.
Reminder: Q&A on Becoming a Full-Time Career Coach
Hey everyone! Quick reminder that we’re hosting a live Q&A session on Becoming a Full-Time Career Coach this Thursday at 12 pm EST This is something I normally do with clients, but I’ll try to do it once a month for the community, so you can ask questions directly to me and get as much value as possible. If you’re thinking about making the transition to coaching full-time, or you’re already building but trying to figure out the next steps, this is the kind of conversation that can save you months of guessing. We’ll talk about things like: - What it actually takes to make the transition - Common mistakes coaches make early on - What to focus on first when building your practice If you can make it live, I highly recommend joining. The best part of these sessions is the questions that come up in real time. And since we only do this once a month, make sure you take advantage of it while it’s available. Hope to see some of you there! And you can add it to your calendar here: https://www.skool.com/careercoaches/calendar?eid=b3c8d0d944f44315a509e03336166e38
