On the Sublime and Infinite Majesty of God
Brothers, tonight I was studying the Summa Theologiae of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the first articles on sacred doctrine and the identity of God to be exact. I was particularly touched by the doctrine of divine simplicity and the goodness of God. Saint Thomas teaches that God is so perfect, that all actual and possible perfections are to be found in Him. So great is His transcendence that, Saint Thomas teaches, that He is above all category altogether. God is simple, and lacks any composition (whether physical or metaphysical) in Himself. These truths are so deep, so beautiful! God, Saint Thomas says, is so simple that His essence cannot be distinguished from His existence. Hence, we can and should say that God IS Being Itself, IS Existence Itself. Therefore, and this is the takeaway here, there is nothing that IS without Him moving it TO BE. Brothers, I say this not to give a course in theology. I say this to stir in you holy fear and admiration of Godās Majesty. Now, consider also the goodness of God. Goodness is the desirability of a thing. God, having all perfection within His infinite and simple Self, and since all existing goods have a participation in existence, which God is by nature as we said, is infinitely to be desired by all rational beings. Hence, God is not only infinitely good, but is very Goodness! Brothers, pause for a moment and contemplate the beauty of God, His perfections, His simplicity and His Majesty. And then consider this: this same God became man and suffered for you. Consider that, by the help of His grace, you are destined to possess and enjoy this God for all eternity, starting even now in this life. Consider that it is this same God whom you offend by your sins, and whom you risk to lose forever should you not repent. Meditate on this deeply, and I assure you, the love of God will be more easy and pleasant to achieve. Meditate on this, and this valley of tears will seem as a trifle compared to the glory we are working for. Nothing will be too hard to do for such a God of power, of majesty, of gentle love! His grace assists us, His power shields us and His love keeps us. Let us serve the Lord with holy fear and trembling, with awe and reverence. Remember that it is this same God of majesty whom you receive in Holy Communion! Let us do all things for love of Him, for in truth, nothing is good or lasting without Him! Praise the Lord, all you His Angels, and glorify Him all you His Saints! Let every creature in Heaven, on earth and under the earth bless and adore the Lord God of Hosts forever and ever! Amen! So be it!
