Controlling Mount
Hi @James Driskill , I can’t make tonights live call but I wanted to ask if you could cover some mount control principles. I was training with a pretty big guy this week and i was failing miserable at maintaining mount. 👉🏼 I was staying low chest to chest 👉🏼 controlling his head with a cross face 👉🏼 working with trying to keep my hooks in… But he keep powering out. I was-able to move to other positions of control, but I’m frustrated with not having better control in the mount position. Thanks

No worries. I’m cool waiting for next Saturday’s class.
Focus for the week (ramping)
This week when you catch someone in a submission, practice ramping. Ramping means to slowly increase the intensity of the squeeze. Count to 10 while you apply your submission. Increase your pressure by 5% on each count. This will give your partner time to try to mount an escape. This will also give you an opportunity to practice maintaining control instead of racing to finish before they slip away. When we ramp something like a choke, our partner feels like they cannot wait this out because it just gets worse over time. On top of that, we are far less likely to exhaust ourselves and burn out squeezing as hard as possible. When we make it a habit to work this way with our partners for the majority of rounds, everyone gets better.

So I've been playing around with this concept on takedowns this week. Last night was probably the best example of it. I was working on getting to the clinch and attempting the fold takedown ( picked it up from @Chris Burns ) At first I wasn't even thinking about ramping, I was just fighting hard for a takedown. I kept getting into position, kept losing it because I trying to He-Man shit. Then I remembered what you said about ramping so slowed myself down and focused on building pressure progressively instead of going hell- bent- for-leather. That's when something clicked and I realized my head positioning had been completely off, and I wasn't walking my hips in at all. I was literally just trying to arm-wrestle the whole thing instead of using my structure properly. As soon as I started ramping the pressure and walking my hips up underneath me, bam, the takedown just came in easy. Honestly I probably never would have had the clarity to see what I was screwing up without applying this principle. Basically, my only option would’ve been - go to @Chris Burns page and write a nasty comment telling him “ this shit doesn’t work in the real world” 😂 @James Driskill Thanks for the advice.
Focus for the week (pacing)
This week, practice varying your pace during training. Start slow and gradually increase your pace until the end. Go from slow to fast to slow again. Put your attention on pace and vary it intentionally instead of just reacting to your partner. Don’t worry if you miss opportunities. Notice how your partner reacts when you change pace. We are just sharpening tools that may not have been used in a while.
