A common speaker (toxic) mindset
When I started speaking, I focused on: 1. Adding thousands of names just to hit a big number. ↪️ "I'll just buy a lead list of 10,000 names!" 2. Casting the widest net possible, hoping something would stick. ↪️ "Everyone needs to hear my message!" 3. Sending generic emails to anyone who might hire a speaker. ↪️ "Dear {event planner} are you looking for a speaker for your next event?" But, I FELT like I was doing a lot of work (”oh I’m adding people to my list”) I was chasing quantity, not quality. I was chasing a bigger list, not better connections. I was chasing more outreach, not meaningful conversations. The reason? The speaking industry makes you think that is the goal. "You need to send 100 cold emails per week to be a successful speaker!" 👈 The old way Because if you think about it, it would be IMPOSSIBLE connect with everyone. (...and your brain agrees. The job is just too massive, so you don't do it) No matter how many speaker success stories we read... There are 10x failure ones underneath. Build your core client list. Those who love you and want to throw money at you. Flip the narrative → focus on growing deep relationships. (until the focus is on you) Do you agree? yes/no

Yes
I failed - but only a little
Sadly, I didn't land the Queens TEDx Talk - but I did learn a little more about what I need to better prepare for the interview process and that I have a lot more work to do. I still need to drill down into who I am, my niche, and figure out what my pain point is, and how to help relieve that. It's hard being new! I know I can do the speaking part...for me that's easy...it's discovering who my audience is and not just delivering fluff!

Great positive attitude CJ. You'll bag the next one! Any take away from the experience that you can share with the community to help anyone else who may have your opportunity soon?
I Hit Send!!
Today I sent in my TEDx application for Western University! Is it good enough, doubt it. Is it my first attempt…yes!! So I consider it a huge win! We are fear rejection, but like I share in my speeches. I am willing to fearlessly fail! There’s still time to get yours in!

Who had an incredible weekend?
I can't believe that the weather this weekend stayed warm and sunny here in Toronto. Usually it's chilly and wet at this time of year. At least the leaves are changing colours. But here it's Monday again. What goals are you setting for yourself this week?

Had an awesome weekend giving a Keynote to a group of amazing young leaders here in Dayton Ohio. Got to bring my mom who had never heard me speak and my beautiful wife who always supports my passion. Hopefully this will bring value to the program and credibility as I will be applying to join the staff and provide leadership training to these kids in their year long journey!! God is good!
