Finally watched this. It was excellent. Alex w a great question on closed guard when opponent too big. Excellent answer and demo of how to use knee shield/vale tudo guard and switch from side to side as an answer to the opponent’s movements. I have been having a lot of success with that technique. Also excellent q from Gracie university practitioner on mount defense from strikes and great explanation by James and Chris. Thank you @Chris Burns for the advice on the back rehab. Sciatica pain is the worst. I’m going to check out a practitioner that uses the method you mentioned. Very glad to hear you will be trying Functional Patterns. You will enjoy it and find it helpful. Cherry on top was the Dave Kama headlock escape! I was working some headlock defenses with @Alex Marrero this morning. Looking forward to playing with the Kama escape and battle testing it a bit.

Not yet. Honestly just feel extremely blessed to be able to train w @James Driskill in person and watch @Chris Burns videos. 30 seconds after finishing Rickson’s book, I was on the phone w my jiu jitsu school asking them to sign me up. Getting onto the mat with him would be a dream come true but just being able to shake his hand and thank him for his contribution to the art and for being a role model for me would be more than enough. Thank you @James Driskill for your generosity with your time and by creating this community. I look forward to continuing to participate and learn from all of the members and hope to contribute whatever I can. Keep training hard boys and girls!

What's everyone's everyday carry? I had my CHL but let it expire and carry a small knife every once in awhile. Pretty lax gun and knife laws where I live but most places I want to visit and carry ban firearms and have metal detectors.

@Jordan Hamm i also think crush everything has a self defense tool that isn’t made of metal

@Jordan Hamm Very expensive screwdriver! Someone told me once that they just go to a hardware store wherever they travel and get a cheap screwdriver to carry around and then return it or give it away before returning home. Seems ok if you have the time i guess.
Injury
I have been dealing with low back pain and sciatica for many years, starting with CrossFit which I quit and then went to Functional Patterns. Then I started jiu jitsu 2 years ago more or less and started getting pain flare ups. What I have been dealing with mostly lately is sciatica. My last bout on my right leg was finally 98 percent gone and I was feeling great but during a hard spar on Friday I was taken down by my opponent and crashed on my hip on the mat. I didn’t feel much at the time but by Friday afternoon the sciatica is now present in my left leg. I know it’s important to spar but being in pain stinks and I am less able to defend myself while injured. I’m curious to hear from others about how they deal with injuries and keep the long term goal of being strong and healthy and able to defend themselves vs testing learned skills by sparring. Right now I think I’m going to take a long break from hard sparring, at least from stand up, I think it’s better to train takedowns and takedown defenses by drilling for now vs sparring.
