In theory, jiu jitsu is a complete art for self defense. Assuming you are taught all of the self defense aspects of the art, I would say that Krav Maga or Kung Fu would be good complements for self defense. For sport, wrestling and judo. Thai boxing runner up for self defense. Also, wrestling and judo def help self defense.
Hardest lesson🧐
What’s the hardest thing to teach in BJJ? Timing? Pressure? Grip fighting? Guard passing? Etc. As an instructor, I find teaching students how to relax and be calm is most challenging. For a few classes they’re doing great, but eventually go back to being tense. I don’t know if it’s something that can be taught, or if it’s a phase that they have to get through like we all did at one point. Curious to hear your thoughts 👊🏻

I find that the more I work on technical escapes, the calmer I am during rolls. Last night I found myself under a more experienced, younger, and MUCH larger opponent. He spent the entire round on top of me but wasn’t able to tap me until the end (the defense to what he got me with will be my Q&A question this weekend). He had some kind of choke attempt on me while I was in half guard bottom and he was also trying to smother my face with his body. I just kept trying to relax and use frames to create some space for me to be able to breath. Used the breathing techniques James taught us. We stayed in the position for a long time and I would wait for the right moment to bump and improve my position and then relax again and catch my breath and save my energy. Eventually he gave up the attempt and we continued rolling.
An answer from last week's Q&A session.
During Q&A Professor James showed how to escape from cross body side control. Great details on using your shoulder position. Looking forward to learning more at Saturday's Q&A sessions.

I used this many times last night in an hour long sparring class of 5 min rounds and changing partners every round. Holding on to the opponents belt and leaning into them to come up out of the belly down and turtle is key. Thanks again James.

I've never had an MRI. I assume there are bulging and or damaged discs. However, since i know one can have that come up on an MRI and still have no pain, I have elected to not do the MRI so that I dont create unnecessary fear and worry in my mind.

@Josh Brock thanks. I still ache sometimes and have mild sciatica but right now I’m at what I would call 90-95 percent if at my worst I was at 5-10 percent.

Here is a short segment of some breath work that Professor James walked Premium Members through. My goal is to do the breath of 🔥 everyday. Eventually I would like to build up to 3 sets but my goal to start is only a single one minute round. I'm going to comment done every day after I finish. Please comment done after you finish your breath work.

Started reading Homer’s Odyssey. Read it in high school but it will be cool to read it again now from a different perspective in life. My sister enjoyed Atomic Habits. Will check that one out. A good one I read recently is the Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins
