Fruit Storage
Dear 80/10/10 Community,
I have been following this diet since 1,5 years and it’s going great.
One topic I have yet not been able to solve intelligently, is fruit storage.
How do you store large quantities of fruit, like 100-120kg of bananas, keeping in mind the following aspects:
1. Easy Maintenance: The storage system must allow for simple and thorough cleaning to ensure hygiene.
2. Gentle Handling: Fruits should not be stacked excessively to avoid bruising or damage, requiring ample surface area.
3. Pest Prevention: The solution must effectively deter insects such as ants and fruit flies.
In my research, I’ve encountered two approaches:
- Industrial-scale systems e.g., climate-controlled ripening rooms, which are oversized, costly, and unnecessary for my needs, as I do not require accelerated ripening.
- Household Solutions e.g., sealed plastic bags or small baskets, which lack airflow or sufficient capacity for bulk storage.
The only idea I have been able to come up with is:
A customizable stainless steel shelving unit designed as follows:
- Adjustable Shelves: Each shelf spaced at 30 cm in height to accommodate a single layer of bananas or similar fruits, eliminating stacking.
- Pull-Out Trays: Stainless steel trays mounted on sliding rails for easy access to front and back portions of the shelf. Not being perforated and being removable making it easier to clean.
- Mesh Enclosure: The entire unit enclosed in stainless steel mesh (1–2 mm aperture) to block pests, with a front mesh door for accessibility.
While this design addresses airflow, hygiene (stainless steel is easy to clean), and pest control, I would prefer to avoid custom fabrication.
Please share how you store your fruit 🙏
