Sheriff’s K9 hit, killed by car after firework startles dog
THIS is what I mean about fireworks! 🥹
An off-duty Fresno County Sheriff’s Office K9 was hit and killed by a car after a firework exploded near the dog, causing it to run into the street on the Fourth of July, the sheriff’s office announced Sunday.
K9 Santi was a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who had served with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office for four years.
“Around 8:30 pm, the deputy let Santi into the backyard to go pee,” the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said. “During this time, an aerial mortar exploded nearby, startling Santi, causing him to run toward the fence, which he completely jumped over.”
Santi’s handler chased after the dog, shouting for him to return. But the dog continued to run from the exploding fireworks.
