I feel the need to rub the shiny off of sumpin for ya.
Winning...
A fellow Ronin said recently to me, "Tony when are you not winning?..."
Truth is there are way more times that I LOSE than I win.
But because I "Respect the coin..."
I don't lose MUCH when I do.
Last year I had some banger BEAMer campaigns.
With one partner in March of 2023, I did $230k.
NOT BAD.
Tony "WINS"...
And I started making PLANS for how awesome the next campaigns were gonna go.
But you know what?
I had 5 stinkers in a row after that.
He set up a sweet little 37k list in the PD niche.
No brainer! PD is a strong point for me.
But ya know what?
The day before we were gonna start promoting?
The partner started to dictate how the copy was gonna go and what we were gonna do.
Tony killed the campaign.
and I partnered up on a deal with a guy I had been following for a year already. I dug the guy's online message!
No brainer, I already believe in what he's doing.
But several red flags later during onboarding calls and the day before the campaign was to start they started dictating how the copy was gonna go...
Tony killed the campaign...
And a buddy of mine introduced me to someone with a 90k list in the real estate niche.
Had the coffee date with the owner and BANG it was as sweet a deal as it gets.
Easy, collaborative, and needed LOTS off her plate.
Day before the campaign is to start?
Her husband (also her marketing director) steps in and tries to kill the deal.
We work it out...
The second email goes out and I get a RECORD number of hand raisers...
...the husband steps in and kills the deal.
Come to find out?
He HATED that his wife had agreed to a 50/50 deal and felt HE could do just as good lol.
I walked away not sweating it.
I didn't lose MUCH.
Here's my point...
What I do isn't NEARLY as important as WHO I choose.
And I've discovered WHO I choose has everything to do what the stance I'm coming from.
The day I let go of having to WIN all the time?
Doing deals got A LOT easier.
Letting GO of deals quickly got a lot easier.
If I'm not attached to winning?
I'm not attached to DEALS.
Most of the time I got my nards kicked in by crappy deals because I was ATTACHED to winning.
I didn't step away from naughty deals when I saw RED FLAGS.
MY FOCUS was on the MONEY and STATUS I COULD have if I just made this deal work!
The savior I could be if I just SAVED their business.
That's a foundation for losing BIG.
But here's a meta lesson.
I put my underwear on just like everyone else.
But and I were rapping on Zoom yesterday when this came up... He said, "Luck is so deep in failureville that almost no one is willing to go deep enough to actually get to it..."
I've failed A LOT.
I just didn't stop.
You could also say I've WON a lot...
But as I've pointed out above that focus wasn't really a useful aim.
You know when I felt like I won THE MOST?
When I learned to really RESPECT THE COIN.
When it lands on heads?
Set up the deal so you win BIG.
It wasn't ME...
I just picked a deal with the right conditions.
Matter of fact I just wrapped up a BEAMer deal this week that brought in $120,279.
Not bad.
But we were thinking it would do a lot better lol.
Some might look at that as a LOSS.
But it's NOT.
Not when you're just "flipping the coin".
When it lands on tails?
Lose as little as possible if ANYTHING.
Not being attached, not having my identity all wrapped up in the deal...
...that was the REAL win for me.
In your corner,
~ Tony
