"How you do anything is how you do everything."
During a recent visit to Texas Roadhouse, I observed a significant and troubling trend regarding the presentation of adult men (in any age bracket). Despite the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere, there is a clear distinction between "casual" and "slovenly." More than half of the men present chose to ignore basic standards of adult attire, opting instead for gym shorts, ball caps, oversized t-shirts, and foam clogs.
This behavior suggests more than just a preference for comfort; it reflects a blatant "I don't give a $*!#" mindset. The frequent excuse that "it isn't a fashion show" is a poor justification for a lack of self-respect and a refusal to maintain a mature, professional bearing in public. It is a failure of social discipline that seems to be becoming the new, unfortunate norm.
My frustration is not merely a critique of casual dress; it is deeply rooted in a lifetime of professional discipline. As a retired military service member and now a senior leader, my entire worldview is anchored by a single, unyielding truth: "How you do anything is how you do everything."
It is profoundly disheartening to watch grown men surrender their self-respect and situational awareness at the altar of extreme comfort. This blatant degradation of personal standards is never an isolated failure. When you permit apathy to dictate how you present yourself to the world, that same careless, low-effort mindset inevitably bleeds into your character, your work, and your obligations to others.
