In this week’s coaching call we talked about RESISTANCE.
The other day, I felt huge resistance to something as simple as taking a walk without my phone. My mind instantly reminded me of thousands of “more productive” things I could do that “need to get done”.
But I decided to go anyway. A 45-minute walk in the woods along the water, no phone, no one to talk to.
And guess what happened?
That resistance soon faded — and through came some of the clearest, most valuable revelations I’ve had in weeks. I even took a detour to make the walk (& revelations) last even longer 😅
In Wednesday’s meditation, we visualised something we have a strong resistance to doing - although we know that it would do us good. Like the phone-free walk.
That sparked a conversation about how modern society conditions us to constantly chase dopamine — with instant gratification always at our fingertips through phones, social media, and endless digital stimulation. (more on this on day 27 of R2T)
- But the high we get from these dopamine spikes is short-lived.
- Dopamine is tied to your brain’s reward system and quickly adapts to repeated exposure, so we end up needing stronger or more frequent stimulation to feel the same reward — leaving us DESENSITISED, DISTRACTED & often DEPLETED. In the same way that excess caffeine can also make us more tired (there’s a goldilocks zone - as with your exercise, see day 25).
Another 2 key takeaways from the discussion:
1) We often experience resistance purely because humans HATE CHANGE. It goes against our survival mechanism. The status quo = safe & secure for your nervous system - although it’s often the opposite in reality, but your nervous system isn’t always rational..
So your brain is an EXPERT at making up reasons why you should stay the same - especially if the people in your environment don’t have a “growth mindset” - they will do everything in THEIR power to hinder you from changing. See day 6 on the importance of choosing your tribe, especially when committing to change in your life.
2) When we resist taking an action because it feels scary, uncomfortable, vulnerable - try to shift focus AWAY FROM YOURSELF and instead towards someone else who would benefit from your courage of taking the action that you're resisting.
For instance - every time I post something vulnerable on SOME, I feel resistance. Then I swallow my ego and put myself out there for everyone to judge - because I KNOW that it has the power to help even just one person to take the necessary actions themselves. And affecting that 1 person is enough of a motivation for me to overcome my resistance.
For you, taking an action that makes you a better version of yourself (e.g. meditating, if that's what you're resisting for instance) may affect a loved one in a positive way - that should be enough of a motivation for you to take the action.
💭 So my question for you this week:
Where in your life are you resisting something that might actually hold the key to the clarity or freedom you’ve been looking for? And the key to making an impact on someone else's life?
OBS - you maybe won’t be able to answer this until you give your brain space to just BE.
Cue: phone-free walk in nature😏 thank me later <33
And remember - thank the resistance when it arises. It’s showing you where you may need more love + acceptance. And where there’s an opportunity to open up to a different way forward, and in turn a different reality than the one you’re currently living.
