Trying to avoid memories and build a defense against their surfacing into conscious awareness is a sure way to stifle healing.
☝️ AVOIDANCE keeps trauma going.
Memories need not a DEFENSE but a healthy UNDERSTANDING.
The brain doubles down on what we try to avoid.
Processing them for accurate, realistic framing as portraits of our past is the way to curate our art gallery of life 🖼️
And, remember, “overwhelming” is something that can cause disability or death.
Tornadoes 🌪️
Tsunamis 🌊
Fire 🔥
Emotions may not be preferred but they lack the power to “overwhelm”.
Emotions are the smoke created by the fiery furnace of our own thought processes.
Don’t chase the smoke.
Restructure your thoughts to quench the fire. Consider HOW you can choose to interact with the difficult memory in a healthy way. Perhaps you’ll even find a hidden blessing in the painful portrait of the experience.
Trauma related memories are never lost but awaiting an opportune time for rediscovery and healthy framing.
