Why Inner Development Matters (and how to talk about it)
What is your experience speaking about "Inner Development"? What narrative do you find most effective?
After 15 years in the Inner Development space, I still sometimes struggle to explain why it matters when it comes to the betterment of society. Over time, I've noticed that how we tell the story changes how people receive it. Here’s what I’ve learned, in order of effectiveness:
1. Least effective (though still true):
"Inner development helps us raise our awareness and see problems from a more holistic perspective. From this new vantage point, we can find more integrative solutions."
💡 This appeals to the mind, but often stays abstract. People nod, but don’t feel.
2. Somewhat effective:
"Inner development reconnects us with our natural gifts, talents and purpose - helping us live in our Ikigai (sweet spot where what you love, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for all overlap)."
🌱 This resonates more. It speaks to motivation, meaning, and fulfillment.
3. Most effective:
"Inner development brings us in touch with our shared humanity. It opens the door to compassion, curiosity, connection, gratitude and love. From this place, we show up differently - in relationships, in organizations, and in society. We listen more deeply. We judge less quickly. We act more wisely."
❤️ This is where people feel it. This is where transformation begins.
If you’re an advocate for inner development, don’t be afraid to lead with the heart. That’s where the truth lives. That’s where change begins.
