Writing Task 1: MAP
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The map below shows the development of the village of Ryemouth between 1995 and present.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
ᝰ✍🏻 .ᐟ
The maps illustrate the transformation of the village of Ryemouth over the last twenty-five years.
Overall, the village has changed considerably, with new housing and recreational facilities being developed, while the fishing industry has disappeared entirely.
In detail, in 1995, most of the residential area was concentrated in the northwest along the main road, where twelve houses were located, including four situated on a smaller side street. Meanwhile, the northeast of the village was occupied by farmland and a forest park. Along the southern coastline, there was a fishing port accompanied by a large fish market, and a small café stood nearby. On the opposite side of the coastal road, there were also five shops and a hotel.
Today, although the original houses are still present, several new homes have been added together with an extra road. In the northeast, the former farmland has been turned into a golf course, while the forest park has given way to tennis courts. The most dramatic change, however, can be seen along the coast, where the fishing port and fish market have been replaced by four apartment buildings. In addition, the shops have been converted into restaurants, whereas the café and hotel remain, with the latter now featuring a car park.

Discussion of the Grouping
The report is grouped mainly by location/area, which is one of the best ways to organize an IELTS Academic Task 1 map description.
✔️ Introduction:
“The maps illustrate the transformation of the village of Ryemouth over the last twenty-five years.”
This is concise and accurate.
✔️ Overview:
“the village has changed considerably, with new housing and recreational facilities being developed, while the fishing industry has disappeared entirely.”
This is strong because it highlights:
  • urban/residential development,
  • growth of leisure facilities,
  • disappearance of the fishing industry.
These are the most significant overall changes.
✔️ Body Paragraph 1 (1995 layout) grouped the old features according to areas: northwest residential area, northeast farmland/forest park, southern coastal fishing facilities, opposite side with shops and hotel.
✔️ Body Paragraph 2 (current layout and changes) grouped the present-day developments in the same geographical order: expanded housing, recreational developments, coastal redevelopment, commercial changes.
This organization is effective because the reader can easily compare the “before” and “after” conditions of each area. 😎👌🔥

Good Points of the Report
1️⃣ Clear Overview
The overview is excellent because it identifies the biggest changes instead of listing details.
2️⃣ Logical Sequencing
Systematical movement around the map:
  • northwest,
  • northeast,
  • coastline,
  • roadside facilities.
This avoids confusion and improves coherence.
3️⃣ Strong Comparison Language
Used a variety of change expressions effectively:
  • “has been turned into”
  • “have been replaced by”
  • “have been converted into”
  • “remain”
  • “featuring”
These show good range in grammar and vocabulary.
4️⃣ Accurate Use of Tenses
  • past tense for 1995,
  • present perfect/passive forms for changes over time.
Example:
“the forest park has given way to tennis courts.”
This is grammatically strong and natural for map reports.
5️⃣ Good Lexical Resource
Vocabulary is varied and appropriate:
  • “residential area”
  • “recreational facilities”
  • “dramatic change”
  • “coastal road”
  • “apartment buildings”
These expressions raise the academic quality of the report.
6️⃣ Effective Detail Selection
Enough specific details without overloading the report:
  • exact number of houses,
  • mention of roads,
  • identification of facilities.
This balance is ideal for Task 1. 😉👌
