The pressure regarding physical appearance in opera has changed enormously over the last decades.
Today, singers are often judged not only by the voice -
but also by the body.
Some singers are told directly to lose weight.
Others experience it indirectly through casting decisions, stage expectations or agency pressure.
And this raises a very important question:
Can major weight loss actually affect a singer's technique and voice?
In my experience:
yes.
And I believe this topic is discussed far too rarely and far too superficially.
Because the body is not separate from the instrument.
The body IS the instrument.
