Katie Paterson introduces the idea of "deep time"—the millions of years that make up Earth's history—and reminds us that our lives are just one small chapter in a much bigger story.
One project that really stood out to me was her Future Library. In 2014, she planted 1,000 trees in Norway. Every year for 100 years, a different author contributes a manuscript that will remain unread until the year 2114, when the trees will be harvested to print the books.
Think about that for a moment.
The people planting the trees today will never see the finished project.
Yet they continue because they believe future generations matter.
As leaders, that's a powerful lesson.
Leadership isn't just about solving today's problems or achieving this quarter's goals. It's about making decisions today that create opportunities for people we'll never meet. Great mentors understand this.
They invest in others knowing the greatest return on that investment may not come during their own lifetime.
Katie closes her talk by saying that shortsightedness may be one of humanity's greatest threats. I believe the same is true for leadership.
The best leaders don't just think about what they're building today—they think about what they're leaving behind.
