Monday Mindfulness ~ Unhelpful Patterns
When You Keep Repeating the Same Patterns One of the most common frustrations I hear is: "I understand why I do it... so why do I keep doing it?" It can feel discouraging when you've read the books, gone to therapy, listened to podcasts, or even taught others what you've learned—and yet certain behaviors continue showing up. The truth is... Insight and transformation are not the same thing. Understanding your story lives primarily in the thinking part of your brain. Changing long-standing patterns requires your body to experience something different. Your nervous system is constantly asking one question: "Am I safe?" If it has learned that certain behaviors helped create safety—even if those behaviors no longer serve you—it will often continue choosing them automatically. That might look like: - Overworking because slowing down once felt unsafe. - People-pleasing because conflict wasn't safe. - Perfectionism because mistakes weren't welcomed. - Emotional eating because food became comfort. - Shutting down because speaking up wasn't safe. - Anxiety because staying alert once helped you survive. These aren't character flaws. They're learned survival strategies. The beautiful part is that your nervous system is always capable of learning something new. Every time you experience calm after stress... Every time you pause before reacting... Every time you choose a small act of self-care instead of an old automatic response... You're giving your nervous system evidence that another pathway exists. This is why restoration happens through repeated safe experiences—not through willpower alone. 🌱 This Week's Restoration Practice Rather than trying to stop the pattern... Become curious about what happens just before it begins. Notice: - What was happening around you? - What emotions were present? - What sensations did you notice in your body? - What thoughts showed up? - Were you hungry, exhausted, overwhelmed, overstimulated, or feeling disconnected?

Wellness Wednesday ~ Remember Sleep
A Simple Way to Help Your Body Remember Sleep One of the things I love about the body is that it's always listening. Every experience... Every habit... Every moment of slowing down... Your nervous system is constantly gathering information and asking one simple question: "Am I safe?" When the answer is yes, your body naturally begins shifting toward rest, repair, digestion, healing... and sleep. When the answer feels uncertain, your body does exactly what it was designed to do—it stays alert. Many people think they've forgotten how to sleep. I don't believe that's true. I think the body simply gets really good at practicing wakefulness. The wonderful thing is... Whatever the body has practiced, it can practice something new. This week I'd like you to try something that I've used with many people over the years. The 7-Day Sleep Challenge About an hour before you're ready to fall asleep, complete your entire bedtime routine first. Brush your teeth. Wash your face. Turn off the lights. Get comfortable. Do everything you normally do before getting into bed. Then—and only then—begin this massage technique. Just behind each earlobe is a small indentation. Using one or two fingers, gently massage that spot in slow (or fast), comfortable circles. Do about 100–200 circles on both sides at the same time. There is no need to rush. In fact, you'll probably find that slower feels better. As your fingers continue those gentle circles, you might begin noticing little things changing... Maybe your jaw softens. Maybe your breathing becomes a little deeper without you trying. Perhaps your shoulders settle. Some people notice their eyes beginning to feel heavier. Others simply experience a quiet sense that their body is becoming less interested in staying awake. You don't have to make any of those things happen. Your only job is to notice whatever your body chooses to do. What's interesting is that many people become sleepy while doing this. That's exactly why I recommend doing your bedtime routine before the massage.

Mindful Monday ~ Body Resists Change
When Your Body Resists Change Have you ever started eating better, exercising more, going to bed earlier, or trying to manage stress... only to feel like your body is pushing back? You know what you want to do. You know why it matters. But somehow, following through feels harder than it should. Many people assume this means they're lazy, unmotivated, or lacking discipline. What if that's not what's happening at all? Your body is designed to protect you. It doesn't automatically embrace change—even when that change is healthy. It first asks a simple question: "Is this safe?" Our nervous system learns through repetition. If stress, rushing, poor sleep, emotional overwhelm, or even chronic illness have been your normal for a long time, your body has adapted to survive those conditions. Those patterns become familiar, and the body often prefers what is familiar over what is unfamiliar. That's why beginning a healthier lifestyle can sometimes feel uncomfortable. New habits require energy. They challenge established patterns. Even positive change can feel like uncertainty to a nervous system that has spent years learning a different way of functioning. Your isn't body working against you but rather asking for reassurance. Instead of trying to overpower resistance, become curious about it. Ask yourself: - What feels difficult about this change? - Is my body asking for more rest, more support, or a slower pace? - Can I take one smaller step instead of forcing a giant leap? Healing rarely happens through force. It happens as your body gradually learns that this new way of living is safe, sustainable, and worth trusting. This week's gentle practice Notice one place where your body hesitates. Don't judge it or fight it. Simply become curious. Sometimes the greatest breakthrough is learning to listen more deeply to what your body has to say. Let's talk. Have you ever noticed your body resisting a healthy change—even though your mind wanted it? What did that resistance look like? Was it fatigue, procrastination, fear, discomfort, or something else?

Mindful Monday ~ Unfamiliar Calm
When Calm Feels Unfamiliar Many people assume that when stress decreases, they'll immediately feel better. But that isn't always how the nervous system experiences healing. Years ago, I worked with a client using auriculotherapy to help regulate her nervous system. After the initial treatment, she looked frustrated and said, "You took all my energy away." What we realized was that stress had become her energy source. Her body had spent so many years running on adrenaline, urgency, and hypervigilance that calm felt like exhaustion. When the activation decreased, she wasn't losing energy—she was losing the stress chemicals she had depended on to function. I saw something similar with a client receiving color therapy for trauma recovery. The treatment cause the release of an old emotional trauma, and he became unsettled and said he felt like he had lost part of himself. For years, his identity had been organized around surviving painful experiences. When the emotional charge attached to those memories ended, he no longer recognized himself in the same way. The trauma wasn't who he was, but it had become so familiar that its absence felt disorienting. This is something we don't talk about enough. A nervous system accustomed to activation may interpret calm as unsafe. A person accustomed to struggle may feel uncertain when peace arrives. Discomfort with peace doesn't mean something is wrong, but rather, something is new. Healing isn't simply removing symptoms. It is learning how to live in a body that no longer has to stay on high alert. This week, notice your response to stillness. If things are calm, do you immediately look for a problem to solve? Do you create busyness? Do you feel restless when there is nothing urgent demanding your attention? Just notice. Sometimes the next stage of healing is not learning how to survive. It's learning how to feel safe when survival is no longer required.

Mindful Monday ~ Comparing
When You Compare Your Healing to Others It’s easy to look around and wonder why someone else seems to be making progress faster. Maybe they changed their diet and feel better in two weeks. Maybe they started exercising and suddenly have more energy. Maybe they seem to be doing less than you and getting better results. And if you're struggling, it's natural to ask: "What am I doing wrong?" - Reframe through the body The truth is that healing is not a race. Bodies do not follow timelines. Bodies follow capacity. Every person arrives at their healing journey with a different history, different stress load, different nutrient reserves, different life circumstances, and a different nervous system state. A body that has been in survival mode for years may need to spend time creating safety before it can focus on repair. Healing is about what your body (and mind) is ready to receive. - Normalize the experience Your pace is not a reflection of your effort, your worth, or your commitment. It reflects your history. The body that has carried chronic stress, inflammation, poor sleep, trauma, illness, caregiving responsibilities, or years of overwork often needs more time. That means your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you first and heal when conditions allow. - One gentle orientation This week, stop measuring your progress against someone else's timeline. Instead, ask: "What is my body ready for today?" Maybe it's a walk. Maybe it's drinking more water. Maybe it's going to bed 30 minutes earlier. Maybe it's simply resting without guilt. Healing becomes much easier when we stop forcing the body to match someone else's pace and start listening to our own. Let your body work from where it is. What is one small sign of progress you've noticed recently? Post your answer below!
