What is everyone’s opinion on shirts with patterns on the inside of the cuffs? Both formal and casual wear? Appropriate for a 50 year old?

Curious on everyone’s opinion on wearing suit coats as a sports coat and suit pants as trousers? I have a very tough time justifying not wearing the articles separately because I have a fairly high tailoring bill due to my build. Thoughts?
