Jan 24th Call
Today was another really engaging call. A couple of things that stood out for me: The Life Values Survey challenged a lot of the usual generational stereotypes. It suggested that things like work ethic are tied more to where people are in life right now than to what generation they’re labeled as. Also, in mediation, if someone gets hostile, the idea isn’t to call them out or shut them down. Instead, go back to the ground rules set at the beginning and affect label what they’re feeling.

Hello, Mr. Michael. Could you tell me if you have uploaded the session from Saturday the 24th? I can't find it anywhere. I don't think you uploaded the Zoom link. Thank you. Best regards.

New Members Introduce Themselves The meeting began with introductions, where Tallison, Rina, and Terese shared their backgrounds and reasons for joining the group. Rina, who recently joined through divorce coaching, expressed skepticism but found value in the program. Doug welcomed everyone and mentioned plans to record the session. The group discussed their connections with Doug and their interest in nonviolent communication and healing modalities. Affect Labeling for Conflict Resolution The group discussed the importance of affect labeling in managing emotional situations, with Doug emphasizing that addressing feelings through feelings is more effective than logical approaches. Michael shared his challenge with managing conflicts between two nonprofits and received guidance from Doug on using affect labeling in email communications to de-escalate tensions. Rina mentioned her experience with managing conflicts in her Toastmasters group and expressed the need to apply affect labeling more effectively. Doug also shared his progress on preparing for a TEDx talk, which he has been refining with the help of AI tools. Family Business Dispute Resolution Strategies The group discussed strategies for handling family business disputes, with Doug advising Terese to present facts and concerns to shareholders without advocating for a solution, and to use ChatGPT to refine her communication style. Doug shared his experience of being affect-labeled by AI, while Tallison recounted a reconciliation with a former client who had previously disagreed with his COVID-19 views. Understanding Use Statements in Language The group discussed the use of "use statements" in language, with Jim presenting a Google Sheets document that demonstrates how these statements are used in compliments, criticisms, identities, and other contexts. Jim explained that use statements are natural and common, using second-person frames and pronouns, and highlighted their effectiveness compared to I-statements. Doug praised Jim's work and encouraged others to make their own copies of the document for reference.

I read your TED talk and I must congratulate you. With an impressive opening: “We need peace here,” you transported us from our office chairs to a maximum security prison, using the first-person perspective of a complete stranger who enters a decadent and violent place. But what I found most important was that you put us in the shoes of the people chained up and tied to a cell. Their suffering, their agony... People who have already given up everything because their time is locked away. Their freedom is agreed upon. So what would they have to worry about? The need for emotional freedom that is not behind bars, but inside the heads of people who are physically locked up, but not psychologically, and who have learned that being emotional can have serious consequences. You achieved that freedom by naming those forbidden emotions: your emotions. There are exciting moments, the couple, the letter from the prisoner, which are bound to stir people's feelings and make them react. I hope that is the case. The speech is excellent at provoking a reaction. Best regards and good luck, Mr. Noll.
