Waking Life
I'm curious, first of all, if anybody else here has seen this movie. Came out in 2001, written and directed by Richard Linklater ("Slacker, "Dazed and Confused.) It's a deeply philosophical movie about dreams and reality. What made it work was that the entire movie is presented in rotoscoped animation, with each scene animated by a different artist using custom software by Bob Sabiston. It gives the movie a surreal, dream-like vibe. (Original trailer here.) I've loved it since I first saw it back in 2001. I hadn't watched it in many years (pre pandemic, I'm pretty sure), but have been watching it again over the past few days. I still really enjoy it. I'm bringing it up here because I'm curious: Could you today do exactly this style of animation entirely in Fusion?

Probably a bit of a learning curve, but I'd go for Blender to achieve this kind of effect. It has a pretty powerful 2D animation tool called "grease pencil" and has now a composition tool as well. It wouldn't be a filter solution, and most likely require some amount of keyframing work, but on the other hand you wouldn't get that uncanny valley effect that rotoscoping always gives. 5.1 just came out a few days ago, also it's free. Personally I've always found rotoscoping to be visually "meh" even when done by Ralph Bakshi or more recently in A Scanner Darkly,.. Totally subjective opinion on my part though.
📅 Mar 16th - MONDAY CHECK-IN 👋
Hey everyone, happy Monday. Just wanted to check in and say welcome to the new members who joined recently. Glad you're here. @Sikho Qangani @Jessa Stebbins @Fernando Nogueira @David Hubbard @Parker Humpherys @Mohammed Jaafar @Ariunbileg Alirz @James Rai @Sonia Ramsey If you're new here (or even if you're not), this community is basically a place for creators who want to get better at editing, learn DaVinci Resolve, and improve the videos they're making. A lot of the value here comes from people actually sharing what they’re working on and asking questions. So if you’ve been lurking for a bit, this is a good week to jump in. A few simple things you could post: • A video you’re currently editing • A timeline or workflow question • Something you’re stuck on in Resolve • A small win from a project you finished • A clip you want feedback on Even small posts usually lead to good conversations and learning. And if you’re brand new, feel free to introduce yourself and share: • What kind of videos you make • What you're currently trying to improve Looking forward to seeing what everyone’s working on this week. 👊

It's going to be a solid month before I really get to dive into Resolve, so nothing to show for now. But be ready for a deluge of noob questions when the time comes. 😁 Been through some of the setup and UI courses from the classroom tho, and it's gonna drastically reduce the guesswork when starting. So thanks for that already! Ps. couldn't find any gifs of Steve Martin's "I don't find this amusing Guererro" Bunny eared surgeon scene from "The Man with Two Brains". Such a shame.. could have been a nice companion to your gif 😑

@Andrew Farmer You should watch the full film, if you get a chance or haven't yet.. not the most subtle humour, still one of my favorites in that genre.

During our last online meeting I was challenged to create a video. So I did! 😎 This is not the video that I had in mind. But hey! I went down an AI rabbit hole. To find out why this video and the back-story you'll have to attend today's meeting. ************************************** This is my rough cut - if you have any suggestions or comments, come-on out to the online meeting.

Well, there's two approaches to using AI, whether it's LLMs/Chatbots or Image/video generation. One is using Services like Google, OpenAI etc.. with a monthly subscription plan. The other, is running free open-source models directly on your computer with softwares like comfyUI, VLLM etc.. The former doesn't necessitate that much GPU power cuz it's run by the service provider. On the other hand open source models run locally , yeah... 12GB is the bare minimum And if you're heavy into Photography you must be familiar with GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) It's starting to be a thing with AI home-labs. 😁

@Bob Wild That's interesting, what's Etsy's policy on AI visuals? I remember them yanking some of my listings because some of my 3D printed miniatures showed a bit of cleavage.. Imagine being that thirsty as to go on Etsy for grey resin boob material ..🙄 Think it was probably Stripe's recommandations and Etsy being overzealous tho. [edit] Well probably not the right place to ask this, kinda veering off topic here...
Hey There !
Hi ! I'm Otawerks (An alias obviously, genX habits die hard) I'm French, please don't hold that against me. ^^ Former Parisian moved to rural Burgundy after the first coof lockdown. I have had many failures in my professional life, and learned many lessons, yet kinda failed to apply them going forward. I know this is an intro and not a resume, but some broad strokes to let you know where I come from. Worked for an architect in my late teens, doing all white scale models,. 100hrs a week -> complete burn-out. 3d Artist ,in the gamming Industry, for a few years, but didn't like the corporate environment, which lead me to...- Founding a garage company with friends doing 3D cinematics for game companies. Went down with the internet bubble burst in the early 2000's -> predictably lost a few friends in the process. Pivoted to 3D free-lancing in the B2B communication sector -> Burned-out. Sold action figures on eBay before it was cool and Comics-shops caught on -> Couldn't scale my 1 bedroom apartment into a warehouse. More recently in the coof era, tried the 3d printing gig selling on Etsy -> Moderately successful, was fun at first but turned into a nightmare, couldn't scale. Never again will I do the home factory thing and sell physical products, fulfillments are such a bish. Which leads us to my current endeavor.. This time around I want to learn from my previous mistakes and start a YT chan as a content creator, in the crafting niche, associated with digital products and setup the whole project as a business. So I'm going through business courses, marketing funnels, attention retention strategies, et tutti-quanti. If it gains traction I hope to be able to do the whole personal brand coaching/consulting schtick and delegate some of the more grindy aspects of CC. Right now I'm working on my skill stack and learning how to use DaVinci is defo one I will need for sure. I have yet to reach the starting blocks... 😩 Voila!

@Andrew Farmer Thanks for the warm welcome Andrew ! Yeah I might have over-shared a bit there, but being on some 40-50K other communities, it felt so cozy and intimate here, i couldn't help myself 😄

The goal is simple, help you build a clear, repeatable editing process so videos actually get finished. You’re already in the right place. You’ll find: - Clear, beginner friendly Resolve training - Short lessons that solve specific editing problems - Step by step workflows you can follow - Resources you can come back to as you grow You don’t need to go in order or watch everything. Open the Classroom, look for something that matches what you’re needing right now, and start there. Think of it as a reference you return to, not homework you need to finish. 🚀 Step 2: Unlock the Full Classroom (Optional) If you want deeper structure and faster progress, you can upgrade to Premium or VIP at any time. Premium gives you full access to everything in the classroom, including all current courses, the full 3-Hour Edit System, downloadable presets, templates, and tools as they’re added. You’ll also get access to the Resolve Room live calls & recordings, and more direct guidance as you’re working through real edits. VIP is simply the annual version of Premium at a discount, plus a bit more priority and support if you know you’re sticking around. No pressure here. The free community is the starting point, and Premium or VIP is there when you want more structure and support. → See plans 👋 Step 3: Introduce Yourself Below Before you dive in, say hi. In the comments👇, share: - What kind of videos you’re working on - Your experience level with DaVinci Resolve - One thing you want to improve next Keep it simple. You don’t need a perfect intro. Resolve School works best when people show up, ask questions, and learn together. Jump in when you’re ready, and focus on progress over perfection.

Hi ! I posted my intro in the dedicated section as to not cram up this post. It's a bit lengthy, wont hold it against you if you TLDR it 😄 https://www.skool.com/creator-lab-2518/hey-there?p=f37bc044
