My view is always do it steadily - a sudden change means starting from scratch and an audience no longer relevant, whereas keeping your toes in both worlds allows for a gradual change. How extreme are we talking? E.g - do you now have 3000 irrelevant connections? Maybe time to clear house so your new stuff starts getting into the right feeds?
