It´s the dose that makes the poison: ethanol & the immune system
We’ve all heard that "alcohol is bad," but by now we know that context and nuance make the world go round. And today, I would like to tell you about the relationship between ethanol and your immune system. It´s a curve, not a straight line so in small, infrequent doses, ethanol can actually act as a mild stressor that "wakes up" your immune response. This is often referred to as hormesis, which means that a low dose of a toxin induces a beneficial effect. Research (like the study published in Vaccine) has shown that moderate ethanol consumption can enhance the response to certain vaccinations. How? Well, it appears to modulate inflammatory cytokines, keeping the system "primed" without over-activating it. So, it’s like a fire drill for your white blood cells. It keeps the system alert without burning the building down. And now, the bad part. The benefits vanish the moment you cross into "excess" or "low quality." - Large amounts of alcohol irritate the intestinal lining. This allows endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides) to leak into your bloodstream. Your immune system then shifts from "alert" to "emergency mode," causing systemic inflammation. - Your body breaks ethanol down into acetaldehyde, a highly toxic carcinogen. A clean wine is processed more efficiently, but low-quality "bottom shelf" options often contain high levels of impurities that overwhelm your liver's detoxification pathways. - Heavy intake suppresses the production of signaling molecules, effectively "blinding" your immune system to actual threats like viruses or bacteria for up to 24 hours after drinking. So, getting drunk means you can get sicker more quickly. The bottom line and my recommendation is if you’re going to enjoy a drink, do it like a pro. Always choose good quality wines (no added sulfites/sugar) or top-shelf distilled spirits (Tequila or Vodka) to minimize impurities. Follow the golden rule of "One and Done" (to stay in the "alert" phase without hitting the "suppressive" phase. And hydrate & mineralize because alcohol flushes electrolytes from your body.

Sunday Story: The Forest Beneath the Microscope
Deep down, in the soil of an old forest, tree roots intertwine invisibly. Through those contact points, called mycorrhizal junctions, trees share nutrients and ...information. A tall beech under the sun sends sugars to a shaded sapling. A dying pine releases messages that change the chemistry of its neighbors’ roots. The forest breathes, not as isolated trees, but as a network that aligns its inner architecture for survival. Inside our cells, something similar happens. Mitochondria, our ancient energy producers, are not lonely power plants scattered in the cytoplasm. They form dynamic networks, touching and aligning at sites called inner‑membrane junctions (IMJs). There, their internal folds - the cristae that host the machinery of respiration - twist into coordinated arrays, almost like tree roots lining up to share the same rhythm of water and minerals. At these junctions, mitochondria communicate by changing electrons and protons. They synchronize energy flow just as the forest synchronizes growth. Such precision doesn’t happen by chance: the structure itself obeys unspoken rules, as if evolution hard‑wired a choreography of closeness. When two mitochondria touch in the right way, their architecture rearranges, increasing surface density, aligning direction, and building a bridge for energy. This is a physical “language” inside every muscle, neuron, and heart cell. And connection and structure exist because of what we feed them. Nutrients drive mitochondrial bioenergetics, that means exactly the signals that strengthen or loosen these IMJ links. Whole foods rich in phytonutrients, omega‑3s and antioxidants support the health of this inner forest, nurturing coherence instead of chaos. Ultra‑processed diets, on the other hand, fragment the landscape, pushing mitochondria into isolation, less able to synchronize and repair. So perhaps the secret of vitality isn’t just about more energy, but aligned energy: thousands of mitochondria acting as an orchestra. Every meal, every breath shapes that silent concert beneath our awareness.

Fiber and why not everything is black and white
There are 2 clearly distinctive views on fiber: we need it (omnivore, vegan) and we don´t need it at all (carnivore diet and keto to an extent). And there are also some influencers with very specific ideas like: fermented foods are causing a lot of damage in our bodies or an alcaline diet cures you of reflux (these are concepts that often get mixed up: acidity vs ph, but psysiologically speaking it´s quite simple). Do you need fiber at the end of the day? Well, suprisingly, not all of us need the same thing. Depending on our bodies, our medical conditions, we might need it or we are better without it for a period of time. What nutrition should be nowdays (when we do have access to a lot of information if we want to), from my point of view, is personlized guidance. Because what it works brilliantly for me, it might not be a fit for you.

@Elena Maren I agree, everybody is different to some degree - and even how a person thinks can affect their biology and chemistry (IMHO). I do like your work, it is very balanced and well considered.

@Elena Maren Yes. I think I mentioned that after 3 years on the carnivore, my wife has decided to go keto, so I have joined her. We are now 3 weeks in, and my body is exhausted (and I never usually feel tired) - I am going to try and eat more, but I am pretty full and not hungry, I think my body is craving more fats - what do you think?

Turmeric pils are not a miracle anti-inflammatory solution. I know, I know. Every "Anti-Inflammatory 101" blog post tells you to run to the health store and buy a $40 bottle of Turmeric. It’s the "holy grail," right? Wrong. For most of you, it’s doing absolutely nothing for your inflammation. Here’s the science most brands won’t tell you: Curcumin (the active part of turmeric) has terrible bioavailability. Your body is designed to flush it out before it ever hits your bloodstream. Unless you’re taking a hyper-specific, lipid-bound formula with black pepper, and even then, it’s like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun. We are "Supplementing" a lifestyle that is still on fire. I see people taking 3 Turmeric pills a day while they: sleep 5 hours a night, eat processed snacks and refined seed oils and live in a state of high cortisol/stress. You cannot out-supplement a pro-inflammatory lifestyle. One 20-minute walk or a consistent 8-hour sleep schedule will lower your C-reactive protein (CRP) levels more than a year’s supply of turmeric capsules ever could.
