We’ve all heard that "alcohol is bad," but by now we know that context and nuance make the world go round.
And today, I would like to tell you about the relationship between ethanol and your immune system. It´s a curve, not a straight line so in small, infrequent doses, ethanol can actually act as a mild stressor that "wakes up" your immune response. This is often referred to as hormesis, which means that a low dose of a toxin induces a beneficial effect.
Research (like the study published in Vaccine) has shown that moderate ethanol consumption can enhance the response to certain vaccinations. How? Well, it appears to modulate inflammatory cytokines, keeping the system "primed" without over-activating it. So, it’s like a fire drill for your white blood cells. It keeps the system alert without burning the building down. And now, the bad part. The benefits vanish the moment you cross into "excess" or "low quality."
- Large amounts of alcohol irritate the intestinal lining. This allows endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides) to leak into your bloodstream. Your immune system then shifts from "alert" to "emergency mode," causing systemic inflammation.

Always choose good quality wines (no added sulfites/sugar) or top-shelf distilled spirits (Tequila or Vodka) to minimize impurities. Follow the golden rule of "One and Done" (to stay in the "alert" phase without hitting the "suppressive" phase. And hydrate & mineralize because alcohol flushes electrolytes from your body.
