Hardest lesson🧐
What’s the hardest thing to teach in BJJ? Timing? Pressure? Grip fighting? Guard passing? Etc. As an instructor, I find teaching students how to relax and be calm is most challenging. For a few classes they’re doing great, but eventually go back to being tense. I don’t know if it’s something that can be taught, or if it’s a phase that they have to get through like we all did at one point. Curious to hear your thoughts 👊🏻

Idea (borrowing from my first art): maybe once a month, convert a Sunday open mat to a strictly technical class. What we did was the following: say you had 10 show, we would go through various sword cuts, rotating through the group, each member counting off 20 swings…by the time you’ve gone through the basic cuts, eg. shomen, yokomen, kesagiri, kiriage, etc., you’ve gone through a couple hundred swings. The effect was to smoke your arms, torso, shoulders, thighs, etc. That’s when you start technique…no muscle left to muscle your way through…in bjj, smoke the class with calisthenics, then technique…you’ll see people relax for sure… lol. (And yeah, structured breathing while moving through each independent move introduces a meditative state that I would argue promotes relaxation.)

@James Driskill absolutely true!
Wisdom
Share some wisdom with the group. I’ll go first. My opponent is my teacher, my ego is my enemy. Leave yours in the comments. 🙌

Good morning everyone. This is today's quote (Jan 30th) from The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday & Stephen Hanselman; I thought it appropriate today after last night's roll...from Epictetus: "If you wish to improve, be content to appear clueless or stupid in extraneous matters - don't wish to seem knowledgeable. And if some regard you as important, distrust yourself." My simple take - look to technique; your physical strength is illusory.
Weapons
A lone figure in all black with a hood approaches you in a dark alley. He stops 5 feet in front of you. You are unarmed and cornered. Which of these weapons feels the least dangerous to you? Against which weapons would you rather defend yourself.

Prof.! What did you have for dinner last night??? And why is the bat greased? I might take on the dog based on your reply...
Happy New Year 🎆
Hey everyone, Thank you so much for being a part of this community. I am honored by your engagement and support. I started this group so that I could share what I’ve learned with people who don't have the proximity to the source that I’ve been so fortunate to have. I am truly blessed to be guided by Master Rickson on a daily basis. I trust that you have gotten something out of this trial period. I want everyone to have a place where they can feel supported by their peers and find the guidance they’re looking for. Many of you have asked for clear training paths, structure, and access to me so I am building it. More details to come.

@Andy DeJesus This community site is great but I agree with you; actual "mat time" with Prof. Driskill is worth the time and drive!
BJJ wizardry poll 🧙‍♂️
Be honest. This is a safe space. Select the option that matches your jiu-jitsu powers. This helps me tailor training discussions, drills, and self-defense concepts to the group. Vote so I know who I’m dealing with in here 😄 💬 Drop a comment: • How long you’ve trained • Sport vs self-defense (or both) • Or the belt you feel like on your best/worst day 😏

Turning the corner on 53 y/o. Started training 4 years ago; blue belt now. Extensive time in another art. Former LEO and focused on self-defense (but who doesn't like a sport-oriented roll every once in a while). Like another member said in an earlier post: fascinated with the efficiency and effectiveness of the Invisible...
