Open to everyone now (my bad)
Hey artists 👋 Real talk — I dropped a workshop in here recently and I don’t think most of you even saw it (my bad, I had it tucked away where it shouldn’t have been). So here it is, front and center: The Artist Mindset Reset is now open to everyone in the community. If you haven’t looked around on here much is under the classroom tab It’s not about technique. It’s about the stuff that actually gets in the way: artist block, motivation, goal setting, confidence. The invisible stuff that’s honestly harder to fix than any skill. No fluff, just something you can use today. And it has a spiffy workbook! 👉 Here’s what I want from you: drop a comment below with what’s been the hardest part lately — motivation, direction, confidence, or something else? Doesn’t matter how small it feels — I’m reading every single one and I’ll respond. Let’s actually use this space. 🎨

Just finished watching it! The workbook was nice to fill out, I appreciated it. I would say the hardest part about my own journey with art at the moment would be confidence, comparison, and self doubt. I love everyone's unique styles, art, and characters but I can't help but seeing it and going "well, it looks like that part of the art world is covered already, it seems I am not necessary here." I know I shouldn't but it tends to happen often. While I was a sophomore in college, that was when the rise of AI art prompts had really started to begin. At that moment I felt that it was all over. And seeing thousands upon thousands being laid off because of it was a real struggle to watch. Despite all of that happening, I chose to finish my education in Entertainment Illustration. I have never regretted a single moment of it, for it was one of the greatest times of my life. The art community is truly something special. But once you're out of that space, it gets more difficult mental wise I must say. I just simply hope that one day I can look past what everyone else is doing, and build up that confidence to just go out there and do it. Design those stickers, create those books, make those animations, all of it! Taking the first step seems to be the hardest part.
Instincts + Influence
Drop one artist that has influenced you, and write one art instinct that you know you have. What we do instinctively and what we are influenced by can often intersect, and this is a good place to start building your artist voice. Being inspired by another artist doesn’t mean that you copy them, it could be the way they handle texture, color, materials, light, or subject. I’ll go first this is a plein air painter Rob Pointon, I like the way he distorts perspective and maintains proportions simultaneously. What instinct I have naturally is being able to work with paint. Wether it’s realistic or impressionistic I can work the paint to now I want it to be

One of my favorite artists I discovered a few years back is Kamome Shirahama. She is the creator of the story and world of Witch Hat Atelier. Her illustrative lines, creatures, and characters are so beautifully created that I can't help but be in awe every time I see them. She inspires me to keep world building for a personal project I work on. So when I create, I look at the meaning behind certain colors, patterns, animals, and so on to create a piece to engrave in my world. And even use the liberty to give my own meanings behind them.
Trust the Process
Something I tend to struggle with a lot is second guessing myself, especially when it comes to commission works. When I make things for myself, I tend to have more of a “eh, let’s see what happens” attitude and go from there, but with commission works or even something small for family and friends, I really start to question everything I do and doubt the process. For example, this pet portrait I am doing for a commission I started doubting right as soon as I started working on the purple and yellow splashes. I started freaking out thinking that I used the wrong combo of yellow and purple and too much of it…. However, I told myself to keep going and at least finish one of the dogs. Needless to say, I am happy with how it looks for far! Trusting the process can really be hard sometimes, even with watercolor. That ugly phase of painting really be testing me sometimes😅 What’s something y’all really struggle to overcome?

Wow this looks amazing so far! Definitely send us an update if you can! Something I struggle to overcome is comparing myself to others, this really impacts my will to draw because I can't help but tell myself "Well there's already someone out there that can do it better" or "Maybe I'm just not ready yet" But over the years it just brings me further and further back from where I came. I need to learn to start ignoring those voices and to just keep creating. Because once I get into that flow, I'm super happy with seeing how far I've come since I first started.😊
Sketch book messes
One of my favorite habits especially with sketch books is layer drawings and art over everything, there's something about it that just brings so much satisfaction to my brain, I feel like it brings less tension drawing this way, at least for me that is. Not focusing on the proportions, not trying to make it look perfect, but still being happy with it because it looks so cool in the end. I've been struggling artistically to get back to a spot where I feel confident in my art and am in control, I tend to fight a loosing battle with frustration in myself due to seeing my art progression from three years ago to now. I look back on my old art wondering what happened, my artistic skill has drained and most importantly/worst of all my artistic desire has drained. Im finding my way tho little by little, trying to get back in the groove of things ! Anyways here's some of my recent-ish sketch book messes :] lmk what helps you with finding desire in creation again, thank you !

I love this way of creating, I don't do it myself but I should. I'm sure it helps the mind know that it's okay to just have fun with things and that it doesn't have to be perfect! That's great you are helping yourself with finding the way, doing something far outweighs doing nothing at all. Thanks for your view on this!! What helps me find the desire in creation is going back to step one, what inspires me? I love nature and animals, so I find references of those and start building up what I can create out of them. When I pick up the pencil for the first time, I don't expect it to be perfect, but getting the idea down saves it for later for when I have better motivation to draw!
Recent ink works
These are some ink sketches I made for a LARP that I attend. I know super nerdy. I used to frequently work with Ink, doing noir style lighting with the hard shadows and running comic book styling. It has been a long time since I had last picked up a pen and I only got back into this about a year ago. These are the ones I'm most proud of currently. I'm hoping to get some of these off the sketchbook and into an actual frame able piece soon. I find having a story line to follow is the best inspiration.
