DISCLAIMER: I’m not a NATIVE SPEAKER, just an esl student like you all. Therefore my explanation may carry some discrepancies, though I have used some reliable sources to back my following points: LION, LINE, and LIE IN Let’s look closely at their pronunciations in standard English: 1. Lion - ˈlaɪ.ən (LY-un) 2. Lie in - ˈlaɪ ɪn/ (two words, sounds like LY-in) 3. Line - laɪn/ (one syllable: LYNE Based on that (what I have found is that) , Closest pronunciation pair “Lie in” and “Line” sound very close — especially when spoken QUICKLY ( which we tend to do when we are annoyed — in this case the teacher was definitely pissed off), so ‘lie in’ can blend together and sound almost like ‘line’. However, on the other hand, with my little knowledge of phonetics as a non-native speaker, I think ‘Lion’ is different, because it has two syllables (LY-un) and a distinct second sound. In a tiny peanut shell 😂: Lie in ≈ Line (similar when said fast) Lion ≠ Line / Lie in At last, I WOULD REQUEST our Coach @Shane Peterson to help us see the differences clearly!
