On Monday, I visited my father’s grave. Unlike usual, the cemetery felt a little neglected. Weeds had been left untouched, a broken incense holder was still lying there, and the entire place seemed somewhat run-down. The caretaker appeared to be the reason, so I filed a complaint. While I was there, I pulled weeds from some of the neighboring graves and cleaned up broken pottery that belonged to other plots. My wife, who is quite sensitive to spiritual things, said, “You’ll end up attracting spirits. Stop it.” Since yesterday, I’ve been noticing crows everywhere, and my shoulders have felt unusually heavy. For a moment, I thought, “Maybe she’s right. Perhaps I should visit a shrine during the holiday and have a purification ritual.” But then something about that thought didn’t feel right. No… that can’t be. Even if spirits do exist, their personalities would probably follow the same kind of probability distribution as people—some good, some bad. Some of them might actually be happy to be left alone, even if their families haven’t visited for a while. The idea that they’re all resentful or vengeful is probably just something we’ve been conditioned to believe. If that’s true, then half of them would approve of what I did, and the other half would disapprove. In the end, it balances out. The advice not to touch a baby bird that has fallen from its nest belongs to the natural world. It doesn’t necessarily apply to spirits. Strangely enough, once I reached that conclusion, the heaviness I had been feeling eased considerably. I still might visit a shrine during the holiday.
