Limited Lunges
I have a great deal of 1st metatarsal phalangeal joint pain in trailing foot (both feet) on lunges or split squats. This is due to hallux rigidus. My work around is Bulgarian Split Squats. Any other suggestions?

I do box step-ups and I think I can find a leg press accessory for my smith machine. I will also add the goblet squats. Thanks.

I essentially do Bulgarian Split Squats on Smith Machine to avoid pain in the trailing foot's 1st MTP joints. As you said, this gives Bulgarian Split Squats stability. I also use Smith for typical flat-footed squats and RDLs. Shrugs, Rows, and Calf Raises, too.

Have been watching the videos for a few months and they resonate. Trainers telling us to lift heavy can get us hurt. I have too many injuries to get hurt again. I'm 61yo physician, previously a runner that developed a number of orthopedic injuries and surgeries in shoulders, foot, and also a cervical fusion. Ballooned up to 230 lbs through 10 + yrs of inactivity. Lifting and walking for thr last two yrs and now down to 177 lbs.
