How I stay focused as an ADHD entrepreneur 🧠
I have built three separate six-figure companies, and sold one of them for $350k. I've been a solopreneur for over a decade. (Till this year, when I partnered up with the dope-ass human that is @Rex Loyer ) All the while, I've dealt with my ADHD constantly bombarding me with shiny objects, rejection sensitivity, overwhelm, procrastination, perfectionism... you name it, I've probably faced it. Here's are the best ways I've found to stay focused as an ADHD entrepreneur: 1️⃣ Having a clear vision and goal that excites me and lights me up. Never have I been more successful in my life than when I knew exactly what I wanted and was obsessed with getting it. If you don't know what you want, start with what you DON'T want. Go from there. 2️⃣ Utilizing body-doubling and accountability. The most consistent and sure-fire way I've found to getting something done when I'm really struggling to focus, is to have someone work with me and hold me accountable. This is why we have our virtual eat the frog sessions every single weekday morning. Working on something together—even if you're working on entirely different things and aren't even in the same room—is a cheat code to getting an ADHD brain to focus on the task at hand. 3️⃣ Coming from a place of "get to" rather than "have to". My ADHD brain HATES doing things I "have to" do but don't WANT to do. Especially if that task is boring or tedious, or I don't see the WHY behind doing it. The secret I've found here is to change the narrative; I don't HAVE to do anything. I get to—that is, I choose to—do this thing because it supports me in my vision (point #1). If it is truly a "have to" or "should do" thing, I GET to re-assess whether this task is actually in greatest service of my vision for my life. If it is, I GET to either CHOOSE this task (turn it into a choice and a get to) or remove this task by delegating, automating, or choosing not to complete it.

@Bill Widmer I'm loving being a part of this community. I've struggled with ADHD as an adult. I relate to a lot of your points, especially with No. 1 and 5. Before I became self employed I worked for soul crunching accounting firms and private companies, I had a relationship with spreadsheets, unrealistic expectations, and cut throat personalities (which I am not). When I decided that no amount of money would give me back those years of being a working zombie, I sat with my now husband and we talked about what brought me joy and why I decided to become a CPA in the first place. To Bill's point no. 1, With the help of a mentor I had a breakthrough, I loved being a CPA, I certainly worked hard to earn those credentials, but what truly brings me joy is knowing that every morning when I do the bookkeeping or tax work for a client, I'm in way helping them achieve their goals too. I envision my clients as people, not spreadsheets i.e. Today I'm working on Bill, who is a great person, photographer, has traveled quite a bit and has a unique tax situation I'm going to help him figure out... in return he'll pay me to help him (yay!). In my journey, I discovered that for me, being a CPA and providing services (that many of my clients hate to do) was actually an exchange of energy. They feed my goals that excite me while I take away their "have to do"... Win Win. Sorry for rambling, but you can be a successful ADHD Entrepreneur, if you find your passion in things you want to do and turn that into a business. What has helped me is meditation. I'm a big believer in meditation (ironically) that's when I get to shut the squirrels in my head, and focus on my intention for the day. I'm not always successful, especially if I'm not working on a deadline, but when I am, I see great results. I'm currently struggling to get back to no. 5 exercise, diet, sleep, sunshine, and routine... I'm actually excited for tax season, when I get that routine back in my life.

@Bill Widmer what a lovely shoutout! I'm only as amazing as my clients!... No pressure...haha. I truly love helping entrepreneurs at all stages of their journey. I view the tax code as working in favor of those that are doing what you do and my job is to do the heavy lifting so that you don't pay more taxes than you legally have to. 😀

@Alison St. Romain That's a good question, I do not provide tax advise over this platform and everyone's situation will likely be different, but in general it depends... there are two tests that could be met under the Qualifying Child test and the Qualifying Relative test (default test for any other person). when it comes to income, the "relative" must have gross income below a threshold (5,050 in 2024) and the taxpayer must have provided over half of the relative's support.
