The Roadmap assignment
I absolutely will follow this. I have gone a part of the way with my short film, but came across many different stumbling blocks. AND they have been incredible teachers. Honestly my biggest roadblock is a. finding a story that others will want to hear/see b. re. a. believing I have something worthwhile to tell for people other than myself (!) and c. that crew will want to be involved. Because honestly if I have that belief in ideas that I have then I know I will do whatever is necessary to make this. I am a very determined person it is only lack of self-belief that gets in my way... I am getting better at it but there's still a few gremlins hanging around me!

I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability here, Jane. I will say, the cure for a lack of self-belief was not at the end of my OGF 😂 so maybe that is just always something we struggle with as artists?!? I mean, I believe in myself that I can do it again but a lot of the same fears I had before are resurfacing just dressed a little differently and in some cases louder than before! Yikes. So, we just do it anyway because deep down it's what we want to do no matter what and no matter how hard our doubts try to get in the way.

The Truth Assignment
My takeaway is that there are different ways to a successful storytelling career, that it's ok to have failure in your first film, it's not necessarily going to be a straight line and that no one has MY voice. My biggest concern is asking people to work for nothing. I have a reasonably big network and I don't think any of them like to work for nothing and have voiced as much several times. With my first film I paid well below usual rates and that was a problem to get people to turn up when I needed them to as other jobs took their priority. Particularly the director!

Hi Jane! This is such a common feeling - the fear of asking for unpaid work. When I looked at it from the angle AJ taught me - not as unpaid but rather an opportunity to be a part of a feature film - something everyone in my eventual cast and crew wanted and had never done - they were excited for the experience and to be paid in back end points. This payment method has inspired me to make this the best possible film I can in post production. There are people out there who want this they just might not be the first people you think of. ✨

Roadmap Assignment
Assignment #1: Will I use this strategy? Yes I will use the strategy, it sounds like the most natural next steps because its using things that are available to me today. Assignment #2: If yes, what are my 3 biggest roadblocks? If not, what are the reasons? 1. Creating the story that's the most true to my voice, I think it might take time to find my voice. 2. Finding crew, but that's doable. 3. Things i'm not knowledgeable in yet, like post production.

After reading this it made me think that your voice just comes out automatically in the story you create, right? I mean, if you are writing it, it is your voice", correct? I hadn't thought so much about "my voice" on my OGF - because I was learning and thinking about so much else! But, I can see some of my voice in "Hey, Juniper!" I like pondering this and the idea that it's the creation of your body of work where you "find" your voice because your art is a reflection of you and your voice so there it is!? Am I even on the right track here?

@Yuliya Lanina I feel this so deeply. This has been my work as well. I just keep listening to writer friends, writers I admire - they tell me to write. Write exactly what is inside me - my deepest truths no matter how dark or weird or strange or “unacceptable”. What I am experiencing is baby steps here - write the truth that I can write and express right now. Experience the growth and courage that comes from there and then go again - deeper truth than what was expressed before - and just keep going. Just know I see you and very much relate.

Title: 3. The TRUTH Assignment Assignment #1: My biggest takeaway is that I can do this myself. Assignment #2: My biggest concern/challenge is what is the profit margin on your movies when you do them yourselves. It's great to get started but if you are funding your own movie the percentage you make back is important too. Category: Assignments

The greatest profit I am experiencing so far with my OGF "Hey, Juniper!" - to be finished and submitted to festivals end of this month - is the connections I have made with other filmmakers and a belief in myself that I can do this again. I definitely have dreams of what can happen once "Hey, Juniper!" is released into the world - especially interest that brings future investors.
