Title 4: The Roadmap Assignment.
Assignment 1: will I use this strategy? I have been wanting to do something similar to this but persuading my group has been a bit of a challenge. But with some of your techniques the process could be convincing for them. We shall see. Assignment 2. So the three biggest road blocks would be time. Commitment from collaborators. And even though I have an asset that will really be a great location, persuading my wife to let me use it for this project could be a roadblock. But I think I can get through that. Again we shall see.

It sounds like you’ve got something worth doing, just need to dig in and make it real! Build it and they will come.

@Randy Carels I see this a lot. This is where community, and the Ready, fire, aim method, come to the rescue. When you feel like you're toiling away in isolation, it's easy to stop. But when you have a group of filmmakers rooting for you, and many examples of how others troubleshoot the things you're concerned about, your momentum becomes unstoppable.
3. The Truth Assignment
My biggest takeaway is the importance of authentic voice and creating something unique that represents the type of film I am capable of making. My biggest concern/challenge is finding the right collaborators.

Finding people gets surprisingly easy when presented the right way. But you're not alone in feeling like those people don't exist, trust me, they're out there waiting for you to ask them to raise their hand!
1. The Lie Assignment
I've never submitted a film through a lottery system, but I have submitted my band's EPK to several music festival lotteries. It cost me more money than I wanted to spend for a blind submission. It was also frustrating because there was no reason given for rejection. Just, thanks for your money! My biggest takeaway from this video is that I need to create a kingdom. My biggest worry is time. Due to career and family obligations, filmmaking has been more of a dream than a hobby - certainly not my primary focus. My goal is to change that.

Man, I can't agree more with the "Thanks for your money!" sentiment. That's exactly what it feels like. And I completely understand the feeling of trying to make time for the thing you love in the onslaught of obligations. Just another reason finishing a feature is so impressive and high leverage in the pursuit of a film career.

The only way you fail is if you give up. There's still hope! And hopefully a clear pathway to get there.
The LIE Assignment
1. As an actor in my 30s & 40s I did loads of casting director workshops. Ultimately I did get work from them, but only in the co-star & guest star realm where I still exist now, in my 50s. As a writer/director I've cold queried, submitted to one competition after another, joined networking groups, had films screen in festivals, etc. etc. 2. 4 decades and thousands of dollars spent and I'm no closer to attaining my dreams. I do actually have a career in the business and am fortunate to get to work on some really great projects with amazingly talented people, but not in the capacity I want. I often feel I'm merely a cog in a wheel helping to facilitate someone else's dreams. 3. My biggest takeaway is that I wish I would've come across your site 6 months ago before I spent another $12k on a proof of concept lol. 4. My biggest fear or concern is that the film I'm trying to get made right now (which requires real financing) is the most important story I have to tell and I may run out of time without ever seeing it come to fruition.

Hey, there are several filmmakers in here that have spent $80k on shorts, so you’re not doing too bad! As far as story goes, there are probably several you’ll care equally about once you land on them. They’ll serve as the rungs on the ladder to Goldilocks! If you get a sec, check out the Case Study on Cooper Raiff in the main community!
