Running Proactive campaigns with published worlds
Hello everyone! Excited to have found this community. I’m a new game master and loved the proactive campaign book when I read it a couple of years ago. So, when I found out a sequel was coming, I started googling and came to this site! Woohoo! I have a practical question that I’d love some collected wisdom on: how do you provide just enough information about your world to give players enough to build interesting and informed goals (as if they have been living in that world). Especially if you are using published settings like Midgard (Kobold Press) or Fearun/Forbidden Coast (D&D). Maybe this will be addressed in the upcoming book, or if this was explicitly handled in the first please let me know! Been a year or two since I last read it.

@Nick Thompson i like the step by step approach almost like ripples in a pond
NPC template
Okay so forgive me if it's ALL covered in the classroom, but I loved the concept of having goals for NPC's so I added it to my NPC making template. Is there anything I'm missing? - Name: - Profession/Vocation: - Appearance: - Personality: - Fears/phobias: roll d6 1 spiders 2 snakes 3 heights 4 water drowning 5 enclosed spaces 6 something oddly specific like having their back to a window, or the number 13 - Strengths: - Weaknesses: - Mannerisms: - Voice: - Short and long term goals:

Stealth Mechanic for game that is not just rerolling?
Does anyone have a way of handling an ongoing stealth mechanic rather than just re-rolling stealth? I'm making a one shot for the back of my book that is modeled on Metal Gear Solid.

1. I have them do a group stealth check first. Then depending on the over all group dice roll if the beat a certain threshold amount i don't have them reroll until the run into something that makes them change skill rolls. 2. I will also ask with the stealth roll what they do to all help in the group roll. The more creative and fun I will give advantage and inspiration.
Mechanics to encourage RP etc
Just checked out Tristan's video on a proactive character sheet for 5E. (Note: I have no idea what "proactive playstyle" means- never come across the term in 40 years of gaming 🤪so I clearly missed something 🤣). Just made me think on games I've played that use mechanics to encourage certain playstyles. Some examples: Warhammer FRP gives out Xp for Personal and Group goals, short term and long term. Once those are achieved :kaching: Forbidden Langs give out Xp for characters when their Dark Secret comes into play somehow - it could be a character flaw, like Greed, or an enemy nobody knew about that starts messing with the party, or some shameful background element being revealed. Mutant: Year Zero gives out Xp when the PC has risked or sacrificed something to protect an NPC they have to protect, and also when they risk/sacrifice something to mess with an NPC their character hates. Also these extrinsic rewards work really well, I find. Don't know if they'd translate well to 5E with milestone Xp, though.

I personally play DnD mostly 5e and I use a couple of different things for active role-playing as awards 1. I'll give inspiration. 2. Depending on the task maybe advantage 3. An extra 1d4 on the role if they are like dead on the nose about a clue/trap or something involving the storytelling.

@Mikael Hellstrom yes but I've also noticed that at least in my players a move to more attentive note taking and active listening so they can get those special awards. I love to give them the reigns when it comes to describing the cool things they do if they get really high roles.
Map feature
Would love it if the map feature would be active in our community.

@Anzumana Taal yes! I just thought maybe you wanted ideas for map creation.

@Anzumana Taal ohhh i get it that would be cool. But I understand the safety thing. A in person play thread could be made for people who may be looking
