Mechanics to encourage RP etc
Just checked out Tristan's video on a proactive character sheet for 5E. (Note: I have no idea what "proactive playstyle" means- never come across the term in 40 years of gaming 🤪so I clearly missed something 🤣). Just made me think on games I've played that use mechanics to encourage certain playstyles. Some examples: Warhammer FRP gives out Xp for Personal and Group goals, short term and long term. Once those are achieved :kaching: Forbidden Langs give out Xp for characters when their Dark Secret comes into play somehow - it could be a character flaw, like Greed, or an enemy nobody knew about that starts messing with the party, or some shameful background element being revealed. Mutant: Year Zero gives out Xp when the PC has risked or sacrificed something to protect an NPC they have to protect, and also when they risk/sacrifice something to mess with an NPC their character hates. Also these extrinsic rewards work really well, I find. Don't know if they'd translate well to 5E with milestone Xp, though.

@Tristan Fishel OMG! What haven't I heard of this one before? Sounds like the perfect lil' game for a lazy evening of low-stakes fun and shenanigans!

@Chris Burk Oh, yes, I've noted, too, that players very quickly respond to extrinsic rewards. If players get something for action X that gives their PC a mechanical advantage, they will do action X. Likewise, if player character has special ability X, they will want to use it in play. So if X is drama-related in some way, that's also a way to do it.
Over-preppers here?
Anyone else over-prep here? I'm autistic and CAN'T HELP MYSELF! I designed something like 100 NPCs just to flesh out Constantinople by Night because that city didn't have enough NPCs in the sourcebook. I KNOW I won't use even half of them, but THEY'RE THERE so I know how the city ticks now!

Introduction!
Hello everyone! Excited to be here! I just found about about Skool like a week ago and I'm very impressed by what I've seen here. Setting up my own communities now (one is about role-playing games, for both GMs and players). As for my GMing exp - I've run games for 40 years, I was the first forever-GM in the group I got together back in the day. Unlike maybe most of you, I'm from Sweden originally, and so I didn't start with DnD, I started with Dragonbane - it was only available in Swedish back then. Some systems I've run over the years: - Dragonbane - Mutant - Chill - Call of Cthulhu - Delta Force - Middle Earth Role-playing - Rolemaster - Warhammer Fantasy RP - Top Secret/S.I. - Vampire: the Masquerade - Vampire: the Dark Ages - Werewolf: the Apocalypse - Mage: the Ascension - Changeling: the Dreaming - Wraith: the Oblivion - Vampire: the Requiem - Delta Green - Svavelvinter Rollspelet - Mutant: Undergångens Arvtagare - Mutant: Year Zero - Forbidden Lands - Vaesen - Twilight 2000 - Bladerunner RPG - Dungeons and Dragons 5E - Pathfinder 2E

@Tristan Fishel Yeah, this platform seems much better organized for learning things together, with all resources on the same place. What can I say, I'm a greybeard! My favourite game publisher atm is definitely Free League Publishing, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Swede - their game design and storycrafting is second to none atm!

@James Willetts I've heard many good things about Blades in the Dark. Never had the time to try it out, unfortunately! Svavelvinter Rollspelet was the first game published by Free League. A long story that I'm very happy to tell! :)

What do you use as teasers to get your group excited for the session? I'm running Toon tonight with a Mexican wrestling theme (making tacos & mezcal cocktails too as it's part one of my birthday celebrations 🥳) so have knocked up this poster & sent to the group WhatsApp. I've done similar things for our various campaigns, whether dropping faction logos & info for Traveller or back stories for plot threads in Blades. What do you do?

I just do my *evil-GM chuckle* while saying words to the effects of "surely, nothing untowards will happen to your characters this time - just smooth sailing and happiness all around". Makes them nervous 🤪
