🇯🇵✨ Jōyō Kanji Spotlight: 国(くに / こく / ごく)
Today's kanji is 国, the character for country or nation. It is one of the first kanji you learn and is essential for geography, citizenship, and talking about different cultures. 🔤 Meaning country / nation homeland region 🗣️ Readings こく (koku) – The main on-yomi reading, used in most compounds. ごく (goku) – Used when 国 is the final element in a compound (e.g., \text{外国} \rightarrow がいごく). くに (kuni) – The main kun-yomi reading, used for the word "country" or "homeland." 🧩 Common Words 国 (\text{くに}) – Country / Homeland 外国 (\text{がいこく}) – Foreign country 外国人 (\text{がいこくじん}) – Foreigner (person from a foreign country) 中国 (\text{ちゅうごく}) – China 国語 (\text{こくご}) – National language (often referring to Japanese) 母国 (\text{ぼこく}) – Motherland 国立 (\text{こくりつ}) – National (e.g., National University) 📝 Simple Example Sentences どこの国から来ましたか? → Which country are you from? 私は外国の文化に興味があります。 → I am interested in foreign cultures. 日本の国語は難しいです。 → The Japanese national language is difficult.

✏️ Goal: Write a short diary entry in Japanese every week. 🗒️ Level: N5 → N4 → N3 This week’s topic: I am very busy marking papers and writing reports. --- ✅ N5 / Beginner + romaji この間、とてもいそがしかったです。 Kono aida, totemo isogashikatta desu. The other day I was very busy. テストをなおして、レポートを書(か)きました。 Tesuto o naoshite, repōto o kakimashita. I corrected tests and write reports. たくさん仕事(しごと)があって、たいへんでした。 Takusan shigoto ga atte, taihen deshita. It was so much work; it was tough. でも、がんばりました。 Demo, ganbarimashita. But I tried my best. --- ✅ N4 Version この間、テストの採点(さいてん)とレポート作成でとても忙しくなりました。 毎日ずっと仕事をしていて、なかなか休む時間がありませんでした。 早く終わらせて、ゆっくりしたいです。 --- ✅ N3 Version 最近はテストの採点やレポートの作成が重なって、毎日とても忙しくしています。 やることが多くて大変ですが、少しずつ進めて何とか終わらせたいと思っています。 全部終わったら、ゆっくり休むつもりです。 --- 💬 Vocabulary Japanese English 採点(さいてん) marking / grading レポート report 作成(さくせい) creating / writing 忙しい(いそがしい) busy 締め切り(しめきり) deadline ゆっくりする to relax --- 🫵 Your turn!
