Today's kanji is 国, the character for country or nation. It is one of the first kanji you learn and is essential for geography, citizenship, and talking about different cultures. 🔤 Meaning country / nation homeland region 🗣️ Readings こく (koku) – The main on-yomi reading, used in most compounds. ごく (goku) – Used when 国 is the final element in a compound (e.g., \text{外国} \rightarrow がいごく). くに (kuni) – The main kun-yomi reading, used for the word "country" or "homeland." 🧩 Common Words 国 (\text{くに}) – Country / Homeland 外国 (\text{がいこく}) – Foreign country 外国人 (\text{がいこくじん}) – Foreigner (person from a foreign country) 中国 (\text{ちゅうごく}) – China 国語 (\text{こくご}) – National language (often referring to Japanese) 母国 (\text{ぼこく}) – Motherland 国立 (\text{こくりつ}) – National (e.g., National University) 📝 Simple Example Sentences どこの国から来ましたか？ → Which country are you from? 私は外国の文化に興味があります。 → I am interested in foreign cultures. 日本の国語は難しいです。 → The Japanese national language is difficult.
