Why The Cowboy Hat Is A Costume...
I had yet another interesting and confusing, for the other person, conversation today with someone who called themselves a "traditionalist" - all the while conflating Hollywood myth with historical fact. This article from Ripley's Believe It Or Not speaks to the fact that the Cowboy Hat did not, in fact, win the West... In fact, most of the famous events, encounters, and shoot-outs involving famous Wild-West outlaws and lawmen - which many people, in their minds' eyes, typically picture wearing black and white cowboy hats - actually took place years before John Stetson invented what became known as the Cowboy Hat. Hollywood virtually erased the actual hat that won the West from the minds of many, for one simple reason: Hollywood wanted viewers to instantly know whether a character was a city-goer or a cowboy. This, of course, is in spite of the fact that - in real life, in the actual West - there was no real difference. Hollywood also used a similar, completely mythical, hat trope to allow viewers to instantly distinguish between the good guy and the bad guy - by way of the color of their hat. So, if you want to truthfully be a traditionalist and sport the hat that actually won the West, you should probably pick yourself up a Bowler...

And I have two bowlers along with multiple western style hats. Historically, the Stetson style hats were a later innovation, but there were wide brim hats. But the bowler was a sturdy hat originally meant to protect the head, effectively the hard hat of its day. Stetson eventually moved that hardnes of the Locke bowler into their western and police hats. Historically the bowler was the most worn hat. That is pretty much documented though by the turn of the century this had changed. Some of my ancestors were also on those wagon trains and probably wore a hat with a teardrop crown and a two to three inch brim much like thet wore in Norway. It was later on the ranch that the more traditional Western style was adapted though without the cattleman’s crease. A common summer hat throughout rural America was a wide brim straw with a round crown that was easily woven. Winter hats were often fur, those Northern plains were cold. So a lot of variety and as with most things, styles changed.
5/10 Sixth Sunday in Easter And Mother’s Day
Today I wore the last of the new custom shirts, this one a light lavender. With it I wore the slightly darker jacket, grey trousers, drey pocket square, black and purple striped tie, my Italian Spectators and an arrow brim fedora. After service I took Robin out to brunch for Mother’s Day.
