Melt together the orchestra
Hello friends, I have been doing some orchestral stuff for a little while now but I still can't figure out how to 'melt' the orchestra together. Mine sounds like everything is there but not playing together in harmony. How do I connect the strings for example? Am I doing something wrong with subtle compressions? Mixing or mastering? Sometimes it sounds too boomy/woofy in the mids and then I cut them, leave some open for some instrument that needs the mids but it's still weird and too much and chaotic. It just doesn't sound right. I try not to add too much stuff to prevent chaos but when I wanna do more full orchestra you gotta add things to make it dynamic. Thanks in advance!:)

How About You?
I thought it would be fun for us to share a bit more details about ourselves by answering any (or all) of the questions below. @Alex Pfeffer , as the founder of this great community, it would be wonderful if you could kick things off as the first participant 🙂. 1. Which role best describes you in the music industry? 2. Do you play (or have you played) an instrument? For how long? 3. What’s your background in music theory? 4. Who’s your favorite composer or artist? 5. What’s your favorite genre to create in? 6. What’s your dream project? 7. How much time per week do (or can) you spend on music? 8. Do you actively look for new projects? If yes, how? 9. Do you currently earn from your music? 10. What do you mainly do for a living? 11. What do you do when you get stuck in the creative process? 12. What’s your proudest musical achievement so far? 13. Anything else you’d like to share, like a fun fact about you we wouldn’t guess?

Thanks for doing this:D I love answering questions 1. Videogamemusic composer 2. Been playing piano since 11 years old and also guitar and e-guitar. DAW work since 3 years. Everything self taught. 3. I have no theory at all, I play by ear 4. Hans Zimmer, Ludovico Einaudi Lana Rhaine 5. Everything that's dark and melancholic, also vikings (love them) 6. My dream is to make a videogame project where I make all of the sounds myself and write the tracks. Especially in minor keys (I'm obsessed with dark worlds) 7. Unfortunately I have been prioritising sports more now so I barely have time with work, household and more. But I'm mentally better. I wish to put in more time, right now it's once a week. 8. Yes, I email people, ask around at events. not just videogames, also other things like game trailers, short film projects (I have one coming up in october) 9. Sadly, no. I really wish to 10. I work as a companion for a child in school that needs support. In german we call it "Schulbegleitung" I don't earn enough so I really gotta gas up my music game 11. I stop making music:( If I can, I play instruments, if that doesn't work I take a break 12. That I have been part of a very known game called "enshrouded" and I made 7 different gameprojects on a weekend game jam. 13. I'm a figure skater🙃 And one day I wanna skate a program with my own music.
What do you practise to keep fit?
This question goes specifically to (semi) pros in the Trailer/VGM and Film Music branche: What do you practise to keep your skills fit for your job? Do you do ear training? Instrumental practise? Mixing practise? Or do you just always produce tracks and improve through that? Curious what you musical routines look like :)

@Clem Hackmack Yes true. I feel like for me learning piano was the essential. Before I started anything else I learned the piano:D But still can't read notes here!🤓 Don't need it anyway

@Clem Hackmack Exactly
Odd timings?
Hi everyone, do you have any tracks in odd time signatures? I’ve written plenty in bands over the years and occasionally use them in orchestral pieces too. Sometimes it’s just for fun, other times it’s to fit the visuals of a scene. I’d love to hear your odd-timed music if you’re open to sharing!
