Creative + Business Balance
Something I’ve been thinking about: balancing creativity and business. Some days I’m deep in songwriting mode, other days I’m learning how to position myself better as an artist. How do you all split your time between making music and building the business side of your career? Curious what routines work for you.

@Jessica Maddie , regarding the balance between creativity and business, I’m always inspired by the videos from Anne-Kathrin Dern. In addition to sharing a lot of practical and theoretical insights on (film) music composition and production, she also talks very openly about the business side; and specifically on how to find a healthy balance. If I remember correctly, she often starts her day around 4 a.m. so she can get her most creative work done before all (necessary) business meetings begin. Here are three of her particularly insightful videos on this topic: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs62St8qMag - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCfcvGojfVo&t=2788s - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjO_DYHoR0&t=57s

@Milky Singer I just listened to your portfolio, and I think your voice has a beautiful adaptability that blends effortlessly across musical genres. As someone who composes music for film and documentaries, I can easily imagine your voice fitting wonderfully in cinematic contexts as well. You could certainly add film music vocals to your list of strengths!

How About You?
I thought it would be fun for us to share a bit more details about ourselves by answering any (or all) of the questions below. @Alex Pfeffer , as the founder of this great community, it would be wonderful if you could kick things off as the first participant 🙂. 1. Which role best describes you in the music industry? 2. Do you play (or have you played) an instrument? For how long? 3. What’s your background in music theory? 4. Who’s your favorite composer or artist? 5. What’s your favorite genre to create in? 6. What’s your dream project? 7. How much time per week do (or can) you spend on music? 8. Do you actively look for new projects? If yes, how? 9. Do you currently earn from your music? 10. What do you mainly do for a living? 11. What do you do when you get stuck in the creative process? 12. What’s your proudest musical achievement so far? 13. Anything else you’d like to share, like a fun fact about you we wouldn’t guess?

For smooth readability, I included the questions as well 🙂. 1. Which role best describes you in the music industry? Composer and producer for cinematic music. 2. Do you play (or have you played) an instrument? For how long? Strangely enough, only my brother and sister were given piano lessons, while I ended up at drama school, without ever being taught an instrument. 3. What’s your background in music theory? I haven’t had formal training in this area. My understanding of music theory is self-taught, mostly through YouTube. 4. Who’s your favorite composer or artist? The legendary Hans Zimmer, for his unparalleled soundscapes, memorable melodies, and immense diversity. 5. What’s your favorite genre to create in? Cinematic music that expresses different emotions through different soundscapes; from (hybrid) orchestral to epic. 6. What’s your dream project? Scoring a WWII or sci-fi film, or an emotional, impactful documentary. 7. How much time per week do (or can) you spend on music? Depending on other commitments, I aim for about 10 hours a week on composing and production. 8. Do you actively look for new projects? If yes, how? I’m currently occupied with other things, but I do keep an eye on specific LinkedIn feeds for composing opportunities. 9. Do you currently earn from your music? Yes...! The 'incredible' royalties from streaming platforms, which add up to about one decent cup of coffee per year. 10. What do you mainly do for a living? I work in software development at a digital agency. 11. What do you do when you get stuck in the creative process? I used to work on one track at a time, which risked losing freshness and perspective. Now I switch between different tracks to avoid over-focusing and to keep engagement high. 12. What’s your proudest musical achievement so far? My track Labyrinth was the first to pass 1000 streams on Spotify; a small but very enjoyable milestone. 13. Anything else you’d like to share, like a fun fact about you we wouldn’t guess?

Congratulations @Andrew Hand and best of luck with the Artist Rise Program!
I Built a Simple Tool to Harmonize Melody Notes
While many tools support musical creativity, I found myself missing a solution focused on harmonizing a specific melody note. Tools like Scaler 3 offer broad harmonic functionality, but I was looking for something more targeted. As a software developer, I set out to build a simple tool that suggests harmonization options for a given melody note. It’s designed to provide a broad palette of harmonic possibilities to support creative decision-making. Feel free to try it out: https://www.randywink.nl/#harmonizer Feedback is welcome, though due to limited time, I can’t guarantee updates 🙂.
