Throwback Thursday: the forgotten swatch
Within the talks of horology, I feel that Swatch does not get it just due
I understand they are plastic with a cheap quartz movement, but hear me out
I appreciate the watchmaking history of Briguet and the engineering marvel of the tourbillon as much as any of us, but for those of us who were products of the 80s, the swatch brand has its own small piece of horology.
For middle class kids growing up in middle America, the werethree watches we knew about.
Rolex of course was at the top of the charts if we watched any motor car races in that time period. Rolex was there, but none of us could afford that.
IThen We had Timex, either analog or digitall. I went with digital because it hada stopwatch to keep track of my running times
The other option at slightly better department stores was Seiko. We all knew Seiko,, it was a good brand and had some great designs, but still it was $80-$100 plus and most of us weren’t gonna put down the money for a watch likethat as a young male.
Then in the early 80s Swatch shows up with a $30 price tag and so many options to fit your particular fashion and personality style. It opened the door for so many of us to actually want to buy our first watch, as I did, and one that didn’t feel boring. For $100 we could have three different options and even trade them with your fellow dormmates.
Even now if you go to eBay and look at Facebook for some groups on Swatch, they still have an amazing cult like following
So there you have a friend, my thoughts and throwback Thursday have a good day all
