For years I thought “balance” meant splitting my life into neat equal parts — work here, family here, health here, all getting their fair share. That's a lie nobody tells you outright, but everyone implies. Some seasons demand more of you at work. Some demand more at home. Some demand more from your body because you ignored it too long and now it's sending invoices. The real skill isn't balancing all of it perfectly at once. It's moderation — knowing when to lean in, when to pull back, and never letting one part of your life eat the others alive for too long. I've gone all-in on work and told myself it was temporary. It wasn't. I've gone all-in on rest and called it “healing” when it was actually avoidance. Both versions of me were unbalanced in the exact same way — no moderation, just swinging from one extreme convincing myself it was the answer. Moderation is boring. It doesn't make a good highlight reel. Nobody posts “I did a reasonable amount of everything today.” But it's the only thing that's actually sustainable. So now I ask myself one question when something's taking over: is this in proportion to everything else I care about? Not perfect. Not equal. Just in proportion. That's it. That's the whole system. What's the one area of your life that's currently out of proportion
