A comprehensive 100-year study of Australian sheep farms published in Nature Food reveals that while Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) grazing significantly boosts soil organic carbon (SOC) and reduces emissions intensity by up to 54%, it is not always the most profitable strategy due to higher supplementary feed costs. Researchers found that agroecological factors—specifically rainfall and the amount of carbon already in the soil (antecedent SOC)—exert a much stronger influence on a farm’s environmental and financial success than simply increasing pasture species diversity.
