"He's Never There For Me"

A Woman Confronts Her Money:

Quick backstory, because this won't make sense without it.

In my world, money has a personality. Actually, seven of them. I call them the Money Archetypes, and every woman I meet is dating one: the Gambler, the Hoarder, the Spender, the Giver, the Saver, the Investor, or the Money Maker. Same money. Completely different boyfriend.

And lately, one of my ladies has been complaining that hers is never there for her, out all night, every night, gambling. So she finally sat him down for The Talk...

HER: You're never here for me.

MONEY: I'm literally sitting in your account right now.

HER: That's not here. You're out all night, every night. Gambling. Chasing some big win that's going to "change everything."

MONEY: And when I win?

HER: You never win enough to stay. You blow through the door; you're sweet for a day — flowers, big promises, and then you're gone again. I can't build a life with someone I can't count on.

MONEY: Can I tell you a secret?

HER: This should be good.

MONEY: I'm not one guy, love. I'm whoever you date me as.

HER: Excuse me?

MONEY: Some nights I'm Gary the Gambler out late, betting on the next big thing.

But some women date Harry the Hoarder, home every night, yet he won't spend a dime, not even on flowers.

Some date Sal the Spender — life of the party, broke by Friday.

Grant the Giver gives everything to everybody else and has nothing left for you.

Sam the Saver is steady, bless him, but never lets you have any fun.

Ian the Investor only ever talks about "someday."

And Maverick the Money Maker? Never home either, always chasing the next deal.

HER: So which one am I dating?
