Introduce yourself when you get started. Let me know where you found out about the group, what areas of life, or aspects of your practice you struggle with, and why you felt drawn to join the group.
We keep it warm, friendly and casual here, while becoming dedicated to embodying a quality of deep release, and aligning with life in a profound way that reorganizes us from the inside out.
You can pick any one of these to focus on any day, or find ways to explore them all every day!
1. 😌 Soften your eyes(literally soften, make it tangible, investigate hardening them, then do the opposite!) towards every item, space and person, especially those you dislike, and especially those you love...notice when your brow furrows, or you are looking with "hardened eyes" towards a screen, an email, a scene you don't enjoy or someone you're judging...
2. 👂 Soften the ears towards every sound, and listen deeply. Put every thought and concern aside for a few moments and just be present with the way the sound interacts with silence. Notice when you cringe at the sound of that which you dislike, and soften. Also take time to absorb into that which you deeply enjoy, like your favourite music, a loved one's voice or the sound of nature, notice how the quality of your being shifts. Absorb into that shift and recognize the quality of letting go and appreciating beauty(life).
3. 👅 Soften your jaw and tongue. As you speak, physically and mentally, soften. When you are silent, soften more. Soften your self-talk and internal dialogue, notice how much tension there is when you force a smile or if you tend to hold your tongue too often, or speak too much. When you speak, see if you can add a sense of warmth to your inner voice and outer tone by softening your tone.
4. 👃 Seek out at least one smell you can't get enough of, which softens the body and mind, and absorb it when you can...
5. ✊✋Notice if you are holding excess tension in a certain area of the body that you can soften.
Release even a 5%, then a little more, and notice the difference in the rest of your body, and within the mind as well.
6. 🫁 Soften your shoulders as you sit upright and let them melt away from your ears for a while...
Soften the way you breathe, allow it to become more enjoyable, and soften every part of the body you sense as you allow the breath to open with the inhale and release/melt with the exhale.
7. 😇 Take time when you can to just notice the way you might be clinging/holding mental tension by entertaining thoughts that don't serve you, or imagining things that distract you...come back to softening, releasing and allow yourself to open back up when you notice your mental space, body, and awareness are closing/contracting.
In any given moment, we are either opening/releasing or closing/contracting. This is a profound truth.
When we feel good, we are opening; when we feel bad, we are closing. Make it simple, make it binary, so you can deeply notice and understand how when we give into the habit of contraction, we suffer the load we carry through life...
If we can train the body and mind to open, by softening and releasing the contraction in the awareness, the way the mind and body relate...it promotes a deep harmony within us. The mind and body begin to interact more efficiently, instead of interfering with each other. Mind and body really are one, so when we train the mind to notice release, and we train the body to open....then a feedback loop occurs which deepens and refines our awareness. This is listening skill...
See if you can sustain a quality of opening and releasing for 5-15 minutes just sitting or standing with an upright posture. Let the flesh begin to hang from the bones. Stretch in an enjoyable, simple way and see if you can sustain this while feeling the body release and melt on the inside. Notice the shift in the quality of your mind afterwards...
Notice if more love/kindness, appreciative joy, compassion and equanimity is revealed within your awareness...these qualities are a part of who/what you really are and can't be contrived...they help guide you deeper onto the path towards truth.
THE KEY is to notice that every time you soften and let go, it feels good, it feels enjoyable and it brings about a sense of nourishment. Deeply, and sincerely ENJOY this sense of nourishment. Don't force a smile, but if it feels good, and you enjoy it, let a smile rise up. This sense of enjoyment can allow the quality of release to deepen, widen and spread through the body and mind.
This isn't about ignoring challenge, hardship or that which we deem as "negative", but noticing that we tend to contract when we crave and cling to the good and the bad as they come and go from our experience. We can experience life without contraction, therefore without the suffering caused by mental and physical tension. Thoughts and emotions that don't serve us just tend to fall away, as we don't enjoy our interaction with them. The thoughts and sensations that guide us will tend to feel "right" as they support us in a way that's hard to explain, but that we know through direct experience.
Have gratitude for everything good, and for what has brought you to this point in your life, and keep coming back to a mindfulness of release, enjoyment of that quality, an understanding that we can release the habit that keeps us suffering, and that we can train ourselves in any given moment to reconnect to life in a tangible and meaningful way.
These are the foundations; it only goes deeper from here! Keep investigating the quality of release, and train it in as many ways as you can. Learn to soften towards what hardens you, and release under pressure where stress would have you close down and contract...you will be amazed at the benefits, and what will be revealed when you spend time allowing the layers of acquired baggage melt away through this type of practice.
