Tool or Identity
Comfort or Truth?
Agreement
Most people are right to like tools that feel familiar.
Claude included.
Familiarity reduces friction. It speeds up thinking. It makes output feel predictable.
That is not wrong. That is efficient.
But
But familiarity is not the same as optimisation.
And comfort is not the same as capability.
The moment a tool stops being evaluated and starts being defended, it stops being a tool and starts becoming an identity.
That is where the distortion begins.
Story
I watched this happen quietly in my own workflow.
I used to stay locked into one model because it felt “cleaner.” Less mental switching. Less friction.
Then one day I hit a ceiling I could not explain.
Same prompts. Same structure. Different results depending on the system underneath.
At first I blamed myself.
Then I overcompensated and started forcing the same tool to behave like others.
That was the mistake.
I was trying to preserve familiarity instead of solving the problem.
It cost time.
Not in dramatic failure.
In slow inefficiency.
Repeated rework.
Invisible waste.
The moment I stepped back and treated models as interchangeable instruments instead of preferences, everything tightened.
Less attachment.
More output.
Reality
Different models do different things well.
Some handle structure better. Some handle ambiguity better.
Some require more steering. Some require less.
Pretending they are equal in every context is not objectivity.
It is just blindness with confidence.
The tool is never the point. The result is.
Something to Ponder On
If your entire system collapses when one model disappears, are you building skill, or are you building dependence?
And if you had to rebuild your workflow tomorrow from zero, would you still choose the same tool, or just the same comfort?
Remember
Loyalty to tools is optional. Clarity of output is not.
