Facts that impressed me in the Empowering Women in Addiction Recovery course was
- Women experience rapid progression toward addiction problems because of their biology (hormones) that impact reinforcing effects of substances, early intervention is important and should include medical care.
- I was surprised to learn that 55% to 99% of women in treatment have experienced physical or sexual trauma. (I wondered how many women with addiction issues have emotional trauma). Trauma Informed Care must be a key component in successful treatment. It makes sense that women with addiction issues have co-occurring disorders.
- The training reminds us that women struggle with deciding to enter into treatment for fear of being judged, losing custody of their children and because they fear losing financial support since women are often introduced to their substances by romantic relationships.
