Quote of the Moment #8
"Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one."
~ Marcus Aurelius
Caught this quote at the end of James Lawley's latest Gentleman's Gazette issue. Yes, I still check on his work. After all, while several of us might still hold a bitter taste after what happened with the GentZ Lobby/Lounge, it was what originally brought many of our OG members together.
Because, even if it was brief in its then-incarnation, it stood for something we all wanted. A gentleman's renaissance. To come together and raise the bar again after seeing it fall so far in the last few decades.
For men, by men. Not in exclusion of ladies, but as an understanding that, while true ladies have valuable input in our lives as mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends, friends, and coworkers, advice on how to be a better man must come from men as living examples.
Regardless the level of refinement, we all have flaws. Being a gentleman is about more than aspiring to be a good man. It's also about acknowledging and engaging about those flaws. To have the maturity to get raw and respectfully debate over controversy, rather than cover with decorum which too often ignores things.
It's okay to have moments of weakness or questioning ourselves, and to confide in each other. It's how we grow. No one is perfect. On the flip-side, despite many messages in modern society, it's also okay to be masculine, in whatever form that takes, so long as it's used for good.
Finally, if it's one solid truth about being a man, it's that we face those ugly truths and moments when no one else can, because it's what we do. It's what good men do.
