🧞 TUESDAY TOXIN TALK: What’s Really in Your Play Dough?
It’s colorful, squishy, and nostalgic — but what’s hiding beneath the dough?
🧪 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗜𝘀
Play Dough (including the classic Hasbro Play‑Doh) is a modeling compound made from water, salt, flour, preservatives, colorants, and fragrance.
While marketed as “non‑toxic,” that label only means it’s not immediately poisonous — not that it’s free of chemicals that can irritate or accumulate in the body.

  • Generic store brands (Target, Walmart, Dollar Tree)
𝗧𝘆𝗜𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗌𝘂𝗻𝗱:
  • Petroleum‑based colorants and synthetic dyes (FD&C Yellow 5, Red 40)
  • Fragrance chemicals (often undisclosed, can include phthalates)
  • Preservatives like borax or methylparaben
  • Silicon dioxide or aluminum starch for texture
  • Propylene glycol for moisture retention

  • 𝗜𝗻𝗎𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻 (𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹): High salt content can cause 𝗻𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝗌𝗿 𝘃𝗌𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗎; borax exposure can 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 the digestive tract.
  • 𝗟𝗌𝗻𝗎‑𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗜𝗌𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: Repeated contact with dyes and fragrance chemicals may contribute to 𝗰𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗌𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗌𝗮𝗱 affecting hormonal balance and focus.
👶 𝗕𝘆 𝗔𝗎𝗲
  • 𝗧𝗌𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀: Most vulnerable~skin absorption & mouthing behaviors increase exposure.
  • 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻: Developing nervous systems are more sensitive to synthetic fragrances & dyes.
  • 𝗔𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Repeated handling can irritate skin or trigger headaches from fragrance.
  • 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Slower detox pathways may amplify fatigue or inflammation from cumulative exposure.
Swap the synthetic dough for DIY non‑toxic versions made from organic flour, salt, water
& natural food coloring like beet powder or turmeric or red onion.
