Needle Movers
I saw a video the other day with a coach asking other coaches about what basketball drills and skills are the biggest and quickest “needle movers” for players and teams. I wanted to take it here and ask the same thing. Personally, I have repped some drills and skill work with my players that didn’t seem particularly effective for our team or at least the translation to games/live play wasn’t obvious to my eye. So coaches, if you were limited to working on a just a few drills or skills/fundamentals, what ones would you swear by and consider to be the most effective and quickest “needle movers” for your team?
Ball Handling Warmup
For any HS or younger players (plus coaches), this is video from our college player workout yesterday. A very simple but difficult warm up. Notice how many little mistakes are made? 1. Not dribbling shoulder height 2. Ball not moving with the body 3. Not dribbling hard enough 4. Pivots not being brought back to a good base 5. Losing the ball We start with the "Strong 500" series then get on the move with a big emphasis on dribbling with force, moving fluidly and footwork. If you're doing these drills with no mistakes, it is because you are not doing it at a high level. That is part of your growth. Middle school kids think they work hard until they meet an all state HS player. All state HS players think they work hard until they meet a college player (who actually plays). College players thing they work hard until they meet a professional player. Life is about leveling up. When you work out, work HARD!!

Set Workout Plans
I am in the process of creating set training plans for 3 skill levels. Elementary, MS-Lower HS and HS advanced. The reality is the Elementary and MS-Lower HS plans will benefit 98% of players in Montana. These workouts include the drill video and how many to do along with a "how to workout" intro. For any members who purchased an annual plan this is included in that plan. For monthly members it is $20-25 per workout course. These courses will give kids direction. I should have 1 in each experience level by today. Good players perform the same workout multiple times a week for multiple weeks in a row. We want players to embrace "doing the boring work." Too many kids are distracted by trainers who throw new stuff at them every session just to keep them engaged. It does not work. We choose to "DOMINATE SIMPLE!!" Have a great day everyone!!
