Needle Movers
I saw a video the other day with a coach asking other coaches about what basketball drills and skills are the biggest and quickest “needle movers” for players and teams. I wanted to take it here and ask the same thing. Personally, I have repped some drills and skill work with my players that didn’t seem particularly effective for our team or at least the translation to games/live play wasn’t obvious to my eye. So coaches, if you were limited to working on a just a few drills or skills/fundamentals, what ones would you swear by and consider to be the most effective and quickest “needle movers” for your team?

Love this!! For individual development: 1. Stride stop series. The most elite finish and if I had to pick one, only finish I’d work on. 2. Triples (shooting). Handles, balance, footwork, pick up skills in one easy drill. Mid range or 3 ball option as well. Universal shooting dribble. 3. Drop dribble series (ball handling). Fun series that develops “ball on a string” handles. Creativity, movement, hand speed. Those 3, no matter the skill level will improve the player. I feel like saying diamond dribbling would be a cop out cause you can do anything out of that. These 3 are more specific. Obviously team drills would be different as well.

Ball Handling Warmup
For any HS or younger players (plus coaches), this is video from our college player workout yesterday. A very simple but difficult warm up. Notice how many little mistakes are made? 1. Not dribbling shoulder height 2. Ball not moving with the body 3. Not dribbling hard enough 4. Pivots not being brought back to a good base 5. Losing the ball We start with the "Strong 500" series then get on the move with a big emphasis on dribbling with force, moving fluidly and footwork. If you're doing these drills with no mistakes, it is because you are not doing it at a high level. That is part of your growth. Middle school kids think they work hard until they meet an all state HS player. All state HS players think they work hard until they meet a college player (who actually plays). College players thing they work hard until they meet a professional player. Life is about leveling up. When you work out, work HARD!!

Off Season Blue Print
Hope all players and coaches are off to a great off season!! Message me for any direction on drills. There is workouts in the classroom sections and I will add more. At the end of the day SWEAT EQUITY is undefeated. Here is an example of a normal day for one of our committed players: -1 Hour of strength or 1 hour of athletic training (plyos): 5 total hours. 3 Strength, 2 plyo -3 hours MINIMUM per day with court time. 2 hours of skill work. 1 hour of free throw, or dish shooting *This is a MINIMUM amount -3-5 hours per week on recover: stretching, mobility, compression boots etc 830 am: weights 1230-230: skills 3-4 pm:free throws 8-10 pm: between this time, night shooting, recovery takes place This is the work needed to have a chance to become an elite player. (not guaranteed) Workouts are spaced out for recover and workload. If you have any questions. Let me know! LETS WORK!!!

Set Workout Plans
I am in the process of creating set training plans for 3 skill levels. Elementary, MS-Lower HS and HS advanced. The reality is the Elementary and MS-Lower HS plans will benefit 98% of players in Montana. These workouts include the drill video and how many to do along with a "how to workout" intro. For any members who purchased an annual plan this is included in that plan. For monthly members it is $20-25 per workout course. These courses will give kids direction. I should have 1 in each experience level by today. Good players perform the same workout multiple times a week for multiple weeks in a row. We want players to embrace "doing the boring work." Too many kids are distracted by trainers who throw new stuff at them every session just to keep them engaged. It does not work. We choose to "DOMINATE SIMPLE!!" Have a great day everyone!!

Scoring
Spent the weekend watching some good players competing at the MEI. As usual I noticed a few kids who only had scoring on their mind. To the point their teammates were annoyed. You can tell when a kid gets taught at home that scoring is how they will get noticed. This is an age old issue for coaches. As coaches, what has been your most effective way of communicating and changing a selfish players mindset? @Tommy Brown @Mike Erickson @Randy Reddig

@Tommy Brown BLUEPRINT!! Love the 4 points and conclusion. Intentional and transparent across the board! You nailed the college perspective as well. They can watch a kid score 25 and be like "nope, none of those points are realistic at the next level." Then watch a kid score 12 and say "yup we can turn that into 15 at the next level."
