This it that: Choices
Good morning ladies and gentlemen:
One thing I had to deal with and learn in life is the difficulty in making choices. If you are like many people choices can become so daunting that it sends you into a panic attack ( not really, figuratively speaking). One day I was reading this story and it really changed my approach on things. Many of you might not have this dilemma in life and that’s is awesome; but if you do, this might help you as well or maybe someone you know.
So there’s a story about a shoe salesman in Los Angeles in 1950s I can’t remember his name, but he was a very successful and owned a whole bunch of women’s shoe stores. A journalist asked him what’s your secret and he said “two not three” and the journalist was like what do you mean? He said If woman comes into my store I’ll bring a pair of shoes. She’ll try them on and she’ll say can I see that pair please, and I’ll bring her a second pair of shoes, and she’ll say can I also see that pair please? He’ll say which one would you like me to take away? The reason is, because what he found if they had a choice of three they bought none, and when they had a choice of two they bought one. Why? Because that’s too much choices.
So what I started doing this in my life. I’ve added constraint; which is like, I’ve got all these options on the table that don’t matter. So what I’ll start doing is; I’ll start pairing them, off between these two. Get rid of that and between these two get rid of that one, and the choices become really easy and then I get to the final two.
This little exercise in decision making will help make rational decisions in a timely manner without the unnecessary stress.
