Safety Razor Update and a Question

So as some of you know, I started using a safety razor about a week ago. I had read that the blades that come with it were crap and after using them three times, I can agree. I think they did an ok job but just ok. They were Apache brand and I didn't think they were that sharp. I was told that it's natural to nick yourself the first few times while getting used to the razor but I never did.

I just bought and got in a bunch of Astra blades and shaved for the first time with those today I ended up with several nicks which I guess that means that they are much sharper.

I guess my question is since I wasn't getting nicks with the first blade brand and now I am, is that a good thing? I mean, I would suppose that I wasn't learning correctly because the old blade was not that sharp. Am I thinking about this correctly?
